I'm in the market for a new smart tv.

Posted on 02/23/2023 3:38:01 AM PST by LouAvul

Mine is a Sony Bravia. When it turns on, it's got programmed advertisements for the "cause-du-jour" at the top of the screen.

Currently, since this is black month, there's a picture of a domestic terrorist named angela davis in the 60s, running her mouth. And it's A. Big. Mouth.

I want a smart tv that doesn't have all that nonsense and propaganda on the opening screen. It's bad enough that Amazon Prime constantly pimps those liberal causes (black month; homo pride; etc), but I'd like to not have it on the opening screen.

I suggest the Samsung units that have the curved screen. I had one a handful of years ago and the picture was magnificent. It broke badly during a move but they’d stopped making them. Now they’re back and I wish I had one. Worth the dough and no political BS on any splash screens.

I’ve taken the approach of not using smart TV features, and instead use Apple TV STBs separate from the TV, on the belief Apple is the least bad about consumer privacy issues.

32 inch Roku tv at Walmart. $108

I've become a big fan of Roku TVs. I've got two of them in various rooms. I love the small, non-complicated remote controls.

When my 65" Samsung in the living room dies, I'll replace it with one of the newer series TCLs.

Samsung has their own Samsung Channels that are kind of like a bunch of free channels. You get Hallmark, Asian Crush, a bunch of other US channels like FOX, NBC, CBS, etc., but the free channels. You have a bunch of old movie channels.

When you go to Coscto, Sams Club, BJs, etc., you can look at the boxes.

Sony is best if you like Greens/Blues automatically - Japanese. Toshiba is from Japan.

LG or Samsung are Korean.

Phillips is from EU.

All of them are made partially in all those places, with parts from China, Phillipines, VN, etc., and most Assembled in Mexico or Canada.

I’m reading this thread only for the smug virtue signaling.

"I've got a Philco B&W for 'Gunsmoke' reruns. That's all the TV anyone needs!"

We had a Samsung for 6 or 7 years until one of the deflector tiles came loose and left us with a white spot near the middle top of the picture. It was always visible unless the background was dark. It didn’t bother us too much, but then it became annoying, so we got rid of it and found a nice LG. Slight upgrade in size. Great picture and sound.

Personally, I gave up on TV. I read books.

We don’t have a TV because we don’t want those people in our house. They poison minds. They are so negative and say nasty things to each other, and denigrate my belief system while promoting sin and violence.

If I want to watch a movie or something like the Chosen, I use the laptop, watch online.

Go on YouTube there is several options that comes turned on when you buy your tv. I have a Sony Bravia also and looked for videos for the Sony Bravia to speed it up and or turn off certain options. Like reporting data back to them and I think one was the advertisements. I can’t remember what it’s called. One was Somba or Sumba or something like that. They are good TVs but comes a bit busy with stuff we would never use.

I got the 39” Roku for about $200. You’re right. Great T.V.

My Sony Bravia is a couple of years old and doesn’t do that. Call the company to see if there is a setting you can change to stop it.

Curious if you experience any long periods of buffering or outright "picture drops" with your YOUTUBE TV? I have same type of TV as yours. I'm on fiber-optic (Brightspeed) and get download of 7-800 at base and 3-500 in tv room.

Love the pic/sound quality but hate the drops...

Not only do you not want a smart TV—old or new—but you’re better off with no TV altogether.

WINNER!!!

My 55" Samsung 4k Curved hangs on the wall and very, very, very seldom even gets turned on. Usually only in the summer for baseball game (that I stream from a pirate site, I refuse to pay for MLB TV or "Marquee" network.)

Beyond that, it's OFF.

The best TV is NO TV.

“If I want to watch a movie or something like the Chosen, I use the laptop, watch online.”

How could you project from a laptop to a normal-size TV/monitor? Watching a movie on a laptop is something I’d never do, but if I could tweak it for a large screen (50” or so) that would be good.

Are you sure this is the Sony startup screen doing this, or one of the apps like Netflix or Hulu?

I'll bet it's one of those evil "smart tv's" with Google on it.

Girlfriend has one. The behavior described by the OP matches up with what GF's tv does when first powers on.

For the record, she insists we watch "Yellowstone" together. I tolerate that for our relationship. That's all.
