They burn the trash and unrecyclable plastic.
They use that to boil water/create steam, turn a turbine to make electricity. The only stuff from my towns transfer station that goes into a land fill is construction debris.

Everything else:

cardboard
tin/steel
aluminum

All go to some place that recycles it. The largest volume is corrugated cardboard.
