At least 24,596 people have been confirmed dead after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and north-western Syria on Monday, with multiple aftershocks.
Griffiths said he was launching a three-month operation for Turkey and Syria to help pay for the costs of operations there.
Griffiths also told Reuters he hoped in Syria aid would go to both government and opposition-held areas, but that things with this regard were “not clear yet”.
Responding to criticism of the UN’s response to the urgent need in Syria after the earthquake, he added:
“I think if I was standing in the middle of devastation and my community had been hit, I would be unhappy and I would be critical because aid never comes quickly enough. But I can tell you that the UN stands with the people of Syria, whether they live in rebel territories, whether they live in government-held territories.”

I was thinking if would be around 35,000, but if this guy is right it will be over 50,000.
I think 50,000 is an optimistic estimate. There was a lot of unreinforced masonry in many of the collapsed buildings.
I think closer to 100,000, a lot of bodies were pulverized to the point that there is no trace left of them.
Yes, equal to a quake in Turkey in Dec 1939.
This was a horrific event and I have watched quite a bit of coverage (mostly foreign sourced).
In general, it does appear that the newer buildings fared much better than the older ones so building codes likely did make a difference as did the kind of concrete used as you observed.
Everyone still missing in rubble is dead now ( aside from any miracles that had a water source)
A man was pulled from rubble four days after the Loma Prieta quake, but sadly his kidneys were already failing and he died a month later.

The pictures of collapsed buildings are truly horrific. Entire workplaces gone. Entire families wiped out. For a lot of the dead there may be no one left to know they are missing.
UN: We have a disaster. Send us money.
An estimated 140,000 people died in the Japanese earthquake in 1923.
I’m curious (do we have any structural engineers who can comment?) Do these earthquake proof buildings that are built nowadays truly able to handle massive earthquakes or is it all part of the “people being scammed” nonsenese?
I assume that there are building techniques that can make a difference but if the earth decides it’s time for for some intense cartography changes to the new world order, then no amount of earthquake proofing is going to save buildings in a truly massive earthquake.

Indeed. It amazes me that while Turkey is a member of NATO and has unprecedented access to modern technology and construction, a majority of their population still lives in 200, 300 or 500 year old mud huts.
This disaster was readily preventable and my heart goes out to the victims, but the responsibility lays squarely on the Turk government and their medieval culture and religion of death. Sorry, but I have a limited number of tears and patience and the third-world has depleted them both to the point of “I don’t give a sh!t” any longer.

But my prayers continue for those suffering.
And Israel is supplying rescue workers whom I heard are from the IDF. It’s a twofer for Israel: doing G-d’s work and good press at the same time, though for Israel, the former is reason enough.
