(CNN) — News that the Pentagon is monitoring a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon in the skies over the continental United States raises a series of questions — not least among them, what exactly it might be doing.
US officials have said the flight path of the balloon, first spotted over Montana on Thursday, could potentially take it over a “number of sensitive sites” and say they are taking steps to “protect against foreign intelligence collection.”

If it is immune to AA then it is more than immune to this.
F15 can get close enough.
Re: What is a suspected Chinese spy balloon doing above the US?
Spying?
If it is higher than 60,000 feet, I think it is international airspace.
In my last comment I said they included a little snippet in the article, actually I got that snippet on the TV talking about the same thing while I was writing last comment.
Getting ready to detonate an EMP?
Answer: Spying!
My bet is it’s looking for cats to help China with the food shortage.
The Soviets used dedicated high altitude interceptors with high sensitive detonators on HE rounds. It was still a problem to kill one.
F-15 may try to fire a heat seeking missile on a side of the balloon exposed to sunlight but I wouldn’t bet too much on a success.
I think USAF would have solved it if it could.
To do what? Ask the balloon for it's preferred personal pronoun? The fact is that we didn't shoot it down and we aren't going to shoot it down. The media excuses this morning are are just pathetic. "Well, even if it's spying, it's not doing any harm..."
I thought aircraft and balloons are lower altitude and considered fair game?
I remember reading how the USSR shot several of our U2 aircraft down..what was his name? powers? I know in WW2 Sweden even though neutral claimed a high number of enemy aircraft shot down. Both Soviet and Nazi.
Thought it was S.O.P. To defend your “air”space?
It’s not a spy balloon. Xi read Jules Verne and is trying to make it around the world in 79 days.
Apparently it’s a high altitude balloon that’s flying above regular airplane traffic airspace.
You’re wrong.
Again.
Like a Soviet agent is.
Immune to gunfire? LOL. I call BS on that one. So what keeps the balloon aloft? Any balloon can be shot down. Where do you come up with that stuff?
See post #49.
TRIAL BALLOON to see what we will do about it! They are showing the entire world how WEAK we are!!
Had to use the balloon since Hunter and senile Joe are under scrutiny
They are just taunting us. In WW2 the Japanese floated balloons with incendiary bombs over the northwest. Started some forest fires.
That…is the question.
