What would the Church of England be without gay people? Well, desperately short of vicars for starters. As many as 40 per cent of Anglican clergy are said to be gay. That percentage is probably even greater for choir members. A mischievous contemporary of mine at university set herself the challenge of seducing every adult member of the choir of King’s College, Cambridge. Let’s just say Rebecca had a mountain to climb.
Without gay men, the organ lofts of our great cathedrals would grow cobwebby with disuse and the thrumming, resonant pipes fall silent. Subtract the gay organists, gay clergy, gay choir members and gay musicians from the King’s forthcoming Coronation and what would you have left? Two archbishops and a harpist, I reckon. It would be a sad, straight and tuneless occasion.
As a general rule, the higher the Anglicanism and the more “bells and smells”, the greater the gay presence. So, imagine what it must be like to be one of those committed Christians and to know that you are forbidden to marry the person you love in what is quite literally your spiritual home.
That rejection was confirmed last week when the bishops decided that they would not change the church’s fundamental teaching that “holy matrimony is between one man and one woman for life”. However, for the first time, priests will be allowed to give God’s blessing to married same-sex couples. That will allow them to have a service after being married in a civil ceremony. Such blessings will be voluntary for clergy, allowing them to opt out on theological grounds.
The Church described the move as “historic”. To many, though, it sounded like a classic CofE fudge. By giving a blessing aren’t you, er, giving your blessing? Episocopal obfuscation of the highest order.

A church with no God might as well be empty anyway.
Then let it die
Is the Church of England even religiously relevant? What would be the point of a Christian going there? One certainly isn’t going to learn anything about Christianity.
People don’t go to Church to hear the same stuff they get on tv
Add some nature worship and fertility rites to put caligula to shame, that’ll bring ‘em in.
They should change their name to to Episcopalians
Regards,
Nice music, old, impressive architecture and decorations. Nice folks that sing along. Pleasant conversations, etc. In other words, not much to do with God or study, but a nice place to visit once or twice a week. //sarc//
The Anglican Church was founded by a king with a deep carnal appetite, so what do they have? nothing to do with the preaching of Christ
The legal system wouldn’t exist without people breaking the law, so why make anything illegal?
Roman church as well.
If church choirs etc were not staffed by "gay" men then other would come forward to fill their place. How many Hetro men want to work in a predominantly homosexual environment. The Anglican church, as it has done for many decades, actively drives normal Christians away.
Nonsense. The CoE is moribund and on its last legs in its present form. Becoming more gay friendly won’t change the trajectory into oblivion. May even hasten its demise. Soon the church will be a chain of empty buildings, festooned with forlorn rainbow banners, sustained by the Crown’s penchant for funding lost causes.
Because endorsing sin while pretending to profess salvation is worse than no church at all.
Sort of the same reason you want to get rid of a flesh-eating bacteria...even though it’s a living thing?
Make no mistake. This young woman and her editor are completely against any Christian religion or church. They see it only to be allowed as a gutted thing functioning only for social good as defined by THEIR religion — socialism. The Church of England is convenient but they will attack any other as the need and opportunity arises.
We can snicker at the hypocrisy and think ourselves better but that is just what the author intends.
Pray for the parishioners.
Great video
