Is He Wrong For Refusing To Turn His Home Office Back To His Daughter’s Bedroom?
Parent Portfolio ^ | Jan 29, 2023 | Claire

A Reddit user shares that he turned his daughter’s bedroom into a home office after she moved out and decided to live with her boyfriend. However, her boyfriend accepted a job abroad, and she didn’t want to go with him. So, she announced she’ll be moving back in with her parents.

The parents were okay with her moving back in. But, the daughter wasn’t happy living in the spare guest bedroom and wanted her original bedroom back.

What Makes This Room Special?

The original poster (OP) started working for a different company, and they allowed working from home. And, since his daughter was no longer using her room, it was a perfect opportunity for him to turn it into a home office.

He spends half of his job speaking to clients online. So, he needed a quiet place in the house. His daughter’s bedroom is ideal because it is on another floor and has a lot of privacy.

However, since moving back home, the OP’s daughter has been nagging him to give back her room. She, too, wanted the privacy that the space provided.

And, after refusing to turn his home office back to her room, the OP says his daughter is treating him like the enemy.

IMHO once the kid turns 18 the rules start to change, and if the child makes an adult choice like moving in with the BF, there are consequences.

Some additional data would be nice such as the daughter's age, only child, how long she was gone, and if they had a rules meeting before she moved back in. Also, who posted, I kind of think the mom.

His house, his rules. She’s always welcome to find another place to live. Wonder if she’s living there rent free. Probably.

I agree. And if she doesn’t stop treating her father like an enemy she should be shown the door.

Already, is she contributing toward the costs of the household—or just trying to make more difficult the job of the one who is paying her share?

My house, my rules. Want to pay rent for the bedroom, part of the electric bill, then it’s all yours. I’ll charge you $300 a month. Oh, and since you are an adult now, you can also contribute to buying food, and pay your own car insurance. The only thing I would pay for is if the daughter is under 26, I’ll pick up her health insurance from my company.

Funny thing is, my office was my son’s bedroom prior to him moving out. We still keep the bed in there when he comes to stay with us. And when he does, he brings groceries, picks up a dinner tab and walks and cares for the dog. Best part is, he lives only 15 minutes from us so if my wife or I am too tired to walk the dog at night, he comes over and does it without hesitation.

When adult children move back home, they’re guests, preferably paying guests.

He’s wrong only if he allows his daughter to dictate the terms of her moving back into their home. She needs to start acting like an adult.

Agreed. Used to be “when you’re 18, you’re out the door!”
Too many Antifas have proliferated in Mommy and Daddy’s basement WELL past the age of 18.

For example, in NYS you can receive child support payments on behalf a “child” through age 21, yet said “child” can vote as an adult at age 18, 19 and 20.

He can choose what to do with the rooms in his house.

If his daughter doesn’t like it, she can leave.

I am with Dad on this issue. Not only is this his house, he needs the room for business purposes, which pay the bills!

Kinda like inviting to ingest a tapeworm.

She proclaimed her adulthood and independence when she moved in with her boyfriend. Regression is not allowed. Go find some roomies and share a house where you will be expected to share the load and get nothing more than continued permission to live there.

Spoiled brat. She’s lucky to have a room at all. If she wants privacy, she can get her own place. Presumably she is not paying rent to her parents, so...tough cookies.

Whose name is on the mortgage? Dad? Well in that case dad gets to say where the daughter stays. If she’s upset, she should get an apartment.

OMG I remember I couldn’t wait to turn 18 I had my bags packed 2 weeks ahead of time, had a deposit on my apartment I was SO EXCITED!! We were able to work at 16 back in the day so when I got a job at 16 I paid my mom and dad $50.00 dollars a month for groceries ect. Most of my friends who were working had the same going on with their parents!! It was definitely a different time parents teaching* kid’s responsibility before they moved out on their own!! Myself and ALL of my friends were out the door at 18 we could not wait, no more curfews ect.
