How The 1980s Are Influencing 2023 Style Trends

While Y2K and ‘90s fashion have been big in recent years, ‘80s looks are also making a comeback — particularly for 2023. This year already feels bolder than in years past with bright geometric patterns, dance-inspired looks, and more of those oversized blazers (with or without shoulder pads). Thankfully, not everything is back from the ‘80s, but when it comes to bold, playful statement looks, expect to see a lot of ‘80s influence. Given that fashion often rolls through in 20 year cycles, it’s not surprising we’re seeing the ‘80s popping back up. After all, it’s been 40 years, which means whatever came back in the early ‘00s is coming back through again — but with a new spin. If you want to bring the ‘80s back while still being on-trend (or you’re simply curious), check out these looks.

GETTY IMAGES The ‘80s had their own distinct aesthetic when it came to brightly-colored geometric prints — a trend that carried into the ‘90s and is back again today. In particular, look for jackets with bold colors and geometric designs. Think ski jackets or wind breakers worn as statement pieces.

Bright colors were big in the ‘80s and they’re also big in 2023. What’s also big? The jackets are oversized, often to an exaggerated point. Another aesthetic to keep an eye on is dance-inspired looks, like ‘80s athletic wear with a ballet feel.

I’d looked it up and saw that. Today’s a double “learned something today.”

Plural of “faux pas” and “quern” on one of SunkenCiv’s posts.

I look forward to a return of "Googie", "Space Age", and such futuristic and science fiction art styles, but made of more durable materials. Much of it was very visually attractive, like molded and textured concrete.

..Unless I see shiny spandex pants and 4 inch mules I won’t believe the 80s are back.."

Well, uuhhh. I'm kinda thinkin the whole spandex thing is gonna be a non-starter with the current tub'o'lards that'r in the age bracket concerned with current fashion.

The occasional trip to Walmart is bad enough. **shudder**.. d;^)

“spandex”

They said on Jeopardy last night that “spandex” is a rearrangement of “expand”. I never realized that.

Yeah but the 80s were different. When we were in the early days of our marriage we’d drive into Manhattan for dinner and a flick. Some times we’d walk over to Studio 54 to see a few celebs. My wife would be wearing her black spandex a glitter top and 4 inch heels and my biggest fear was that the guy on the rope line would eagerly invite her in while I’d be stopped by two bouncers.

Speaking of the 1980s and mullets, don't forget about the greatest 1980s/mullet wedding ever!

With salad, you should always put the entire leaf of lettuce into your mouth. The only salad intended to be cut with a knife is the wedge salad.

“shirt. She also chided me for cutting the lettuce in my salad with a knife instead of stuffing the entire leaf into my mouth‘

I do that sometimes. But then I have always been independent minded and don’t care what people think. I also use knife and fork to eat Chinese food. :-)

Camo was everywhere.

Houston even had a camo nightclub with camo nets and the entire survivalist/mercenary theme that was popular then.

To update to 2023, just move the mullet hair from the neck to the chin.
