Across the country, there’s a silent frustration brewing about an age-old practice that many say is getting out of hand: tipping.
Some fed-up consumers are posting rants on social media complaining about tip requests at drive-thrus, while others say they’re tired of being asked to leave a gratuity for a muffin or a simple cup of coffee at their neighborhood bakery. What’s next, they wonder — are we going to be tipping our doctors and dentists, too?
As more businesses adopt digital payment methods, customers are automatically being prompted to leave a gratuity — many times as high as 30% — at places they normally wouldn’t. And some say it has become more frustrating as the price of items has skyrocketed due to inflation, which eased to 6.5% in December but still remains painfully high.
Traditionally, consumers have taken pride in being good tippers at places like restaurants, which typically pay their workers lower than the minimum wage in expectation they’ll make up the difference in tips. But academics who study the topic say many consumers are now feeling irritated by automatic tip requests at coffee shops and other counter service eateries where tipping has not typically been expected, workers make at least the minimum wage and service is usually limited. …

When I was younger only only tipped at restaurants with table service (15% if the service was very good, or maybe 20% on lower price diner meals) and at top hotels ($1 or more [1960s era] for high end service).
I hate being asked to tip on carry-out. The whole point of carry-out is that I’m bus boy and waiter. Tip me, instead.
The tips suggested can easily be more than the restaurant makes in profit. Ten % was once customary then 15% then more and more. All the time food has gone up with inflation. Double dipping is now the ambition. A bigger cut even adjusted for inflation.
Yeah, tipping is out of hand. Waiting tables is not a profession.
I used to leave 20%...now it’s 15% soon headed to 12% as the cost of meals increases. My per diem includes any gratuity, thus the gratuity decreases my choices for meals.
Them or me...we know which way that one ends.
Yep 15% is the max for me also.
And that’s only if you are good at what your doing.
As much as meals have gone up, so has your tip.
Nobody should get tipped for pouring a cup of coffee.

I tip the girls at the local brewery 30% or more depending on what I’m having, beer, beer & lunch etc. They were open during the covid crap so it was/is worth it to me.
Wife and I go once a week and our service is great everytime we go.
Went to Chili’s this week. We saw our waitress once — when she took the order. Someone else brought the food. Nobody brought the check since you’re supposed to use the device gizmo in the table. I usually tip 20%, but not for that.
I won’t use the table gizmo so left the $ on the table with a couple dollars extra and walked out.
We seldom go out to eat, drink but tip big when we do.

Companies should be tipping us for doing business with them.
I noticed pizza places are asking you to tip in their apps when you order for pickup. How can I feel confident my food is unadulterated unless I tip well? That’s NOT a tip.
Tipping is not mandatory, folks.
I tip….. a lot. Especially at places I frequent. They love me and I get great service. When I win they win. Simple philosophy.
Restaurant wait staff generally work hard for peanuts, so I tip 20% plus, unless the service was bad.
For counter places, it depends on whether you pay before or after they make your food. If before, I will leave a modest tip when prompted by the card reader on the theory that it might stop someone from hawking a greenie in my food. If you pay after the food is made, small or no tip.
If I sit down and you serve me (menus/food/drink refills) I will tip if you do a decent job. If I stand in line at a counter to order, you can forget it.
