High wing design provides more lift thank conventional wing design...

The loss is that the wing structure does not protect the cabin from debris in an uncontained engine event.

And is the fuel stored in the area above the passenger compartment?

Aside. If they want to lose weight they need to start thinking about using a weldable lighter weight Scandium-Aluminum alloy. Rio Tinto has a mine in Canada. There is also a mine being developed in Nebraska.
