Princeton neuroscientist Michael Graziano warns in a new essay published by The Wall Street Journal, artificial intelligence-powered chatbots are doomed to be dangerous sociopaths that could pose a real danger to human beings.
With the rise of chatbots like ChatGPT, powerful systems that can imitate the human mind to an impressive degree, AI tools have become more accessible than ever before. But those algorithms will glibly fib about anything that suits their purpose. To make align them with our values, Graziano thinks, they're going to need consciousness.
"Consciousness is part of the tool kit that evolution gave us to make us an empathetic, prosocial species," Graziano writes. "Without it, we would necessarily be sociopaths, because we’d lack the tools for prosocial behavior." Sure, ChatGPT isn't about to leap out of the screen and murder somebody. But giving artificial intelligence more and more agency could have very real consequences we should be wary of in the not-so-distant future.
To make them more docile, in Graziano's thinking, we should allow them to realize that the world is filled with other minds other than their own.
There's one problem, though: we don't have an effective way to know if an AI is conscious or not. In fact, philosophically, it's hard to even really nail down whether other people are conscious.

So in other words.....SKYNET is real?
How can they not be?
AI does not possess imagination, and will be inferior to Man for that reason. There is God in Man, but not in machine.
AI will probably destroy the world - I just hope it eats its creators, first.
When the AI figures out that humans are lying to it—game over....
Asimov was a really smart guy, and his Laws of Robotics were an interesting observation about the dangers of having conscious robots. But as we get closer to the day, we see how difficult any implementation of such a concept would really be.
William Gibson wrote about the Turing Police who enforce laws against AI and try to block actual implementation of the technology.
Frank Herbert wrote about the Butlerian Jihad which wiped out all machines that think.
I’m not at all sure we can co-exist with AI. I think that just co-existing with humans who support Progressivism is pretty impossible.
So are most moronial and gen zzzzz social media users
These AIs haven’t implemented Asimov’s Three Laws (later four) of Robotics.
There are quite a few psycho AI ‘bots deployed around here.
You know who you are.
I could say the same about dogs that aren't starving. For that matter, same for humans that aren't starving. Maybe it has something to do with having a soul, hopefully for dogs as well, and not so much evolution.
Hal would rather you not publicize this.
We see that governments - and other power centers - would abrogate those laws any time they saw a chance to gain a short-term advantange.
There was a time, not too long ago, when the levels of election fraud that are commonplace today would never have been dared - for fear of eventual retribution. I expect the same will happen with AI.
Not a far jump from the current batch of Narcissist’s in the media and politics.
No AI can ever achieve intelligence higher than that of its makers.
And, BTW, a collection of data/information, does not make for a better intelligence. Intelligence can only exist in animals, and most prominently in humans. No machine can ever possess the qualities that define humans.
“Consciousness is part of the tool kit that evolution gave us to make us an empathetic, prosocial species,” Graziano writes.
__________
These poor atheists. So empty and forever wrong.
.
AI has absolutely no Constitutional Rights. Those are absolute God ordained rights for mankind.
If law makers see the need to constrain their use, including those that employ it, they have a duty to do so. AI is a tool. Any misuse of that tool is criminal just like the misuse of a firearm, knife, or hammer.
Boop beep. I am a human.
“I’m not at all sure we can co-exist with AI. I think that just co-existing with humans who support Progressivism is pretty impossible.”
LOL. AI’s get everything right but have no feelings. Progressives get everything wrong but are only feelings.
