After years of anticipation, today officially marks the end of Windows 7 and 8/8.1, Microsoft has confirmed.
The aged operating systems will no longer receive Microsoft security updates from today, January 10, 2023, marking the end of their official lifespan.
Anyone using the software will now be at risk of cyberattacks from criminals exploiting current and future security flaws and vulnerabilities, and is urged to update to newer Windows versions - particularly Windows 11 - immediately in order to stay safe.

I only recently upgraded late Nov 2022 to Windows 10 from Windows 7. I had used it at work and on a laptop at home and did not like how disorganized it is.
I upgraded because of some software required it that I like to use. I first did an upgrade and that had issues so after 2 weeks or so of fighting it I did a clean install which went better. I had to get 3rd party software to make it work better. Just to change the color of the text under the icons you now need either a registry fix or use Iconoid https://sillysot.com
Tip: Use Iconoid for text color and also you can lock icon positions in place.
Use DesktopOK 10.61 https://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Freeware/DesktopOK to lock icons in place. Use Start> Settings> Personification> Theme and Windows (light) theme and change background etc. then save your theme then use WinPaletter and save that theme then go back and save the theme again in Personification> Theme
Winaero Tweaker for other changes.

WinPaletter to change colors of the Taskbar different then the Start Menu.

When you install any program it will take over some default action you do not want even though windows will show say the favorite photo viewer is listed but Windows will keep asking which program to use...
To change your default apps, go to Settings > Apps > Default Programs.
There is a Reset button at the bottom that you use then you choose again your default programs YOU want. Tip: Install all your software then do the Reset then choose your default programs. Any new software and you will do a repeat. I have done several times already!
Also will need to use ‘Choose default apps by file type’ as I do to choose my PDF viewer ‘Foxit PDF Editor’ and not MS Edge!
There were many other annoyances that I did not have in earlier versions of Windows.

Search your software repository local first, if not:

I still have inspection and CMM equipment running XP.... Anyone who complains can feel free to purchase me roughly $300,000 worth of new equipment so I can use Windows 11.
Your situation is exactly why MS should let go of both XP and Win 7 licenses to open source. Technically there is a good case they are now “Abandonware”.

Microsoft-Amazon announced today the End of Life for Windows 69. All support will now be focused on the current OS Windows 666.
Since the product is backwards compatible with all previous editions of Windows, apps and other programs will continue to run in an isolated memory kernel located in the BIOS area of the Free Memory Block..........
Real rebels use Linux. (Command line only)
I have an Apple II with a CP/M card installed.
The Windows 7 user interface is my favorite: It’s highly intuitive and efficient ... and I’ve been using it for years. When I upgraded to Windows 10 which, as an operating system, is also very efficient (though I don’t care for the interface based on the old dog/new tricks fact of life!), I downloaded a free Windows 7 shell which gives me everything I want ... the look and feel of 7, with the improvements and support of 10. Cheers!
Win11 with an M.2 boot drive is very nice. (And it runs my Win 7 games)
I just gave away my Win XP notebook that still worked well.
It’s like cars. Some models are “safer” than others
Found the reason for the FAA outage....
Successfully boots to the OS and can run, oh, maybe a 3rd party text editor, execute batch files, can execute something in Fortran...
You've got me beat on oldest, though. My old DOS 3 machine was still working several years ago, but, I think my brother snagged it for, well, I don't remember...
Yeah, that sort of usage (lab work relying on legacy software & hardware) is why I have a few old machines (and even backups for some) that can take those old full size / length cards. Not quite that much money involved, but, still way too much for me to come up with.
Dang!
Yeah, I miss that old XP Sound Recorder too. But, these days I mostly use Wavosaur. Wavosaur is simpler than Audacity by far, but not too simple. Except that I wish they’d add an input volume control for each channel independent of the Windows’ volume controls.
(That comes with a caveat: I have not tried the latest Wavosaur, V 1.7.)
Someone que up the “not this sh&t” again images!
I'm not aware of Microsoft doing that before. Still, there are probably still some zero-days in the wild that will lose their value unless they are used quickly.
Remember way back when updates/upgrades were about improving computer performance and fixing real problems? Now they are just about improving surveillance of users by the state and big business. Helluva disappointment to those of us who believed in the "computer revolution."
Sounds like a solution... where did you find it?
Work just forced an update to “Windows 11 2022 version”. Unnnngh.
Various UI “enhancements” that suck.
