Tesla autopilot leads police chase after driver falls asleep

Police in Germany say they had quite the time attempting to pull over a Tesla driver who had fallen asleep behind the wheel.

Bamberg traffic officers tailed the electric vehicle for about 15 minutes on Wednesday while on the country's Autobahn 70 (A70) after signaling for a traffic stop with repeated horns and sirens, according to a release from Polizei Bayern (Bavarian Police).

The driver was driving on the A70 from Bamberg in the direction of Bayreuth around 12 p.m. when the police patrol wanted to subject him to a traffic check," police say in the press release, once translated. "He did not respond to stop signals or repeated horns from the officers."

The Tesla vehicle noticeably maintained a speed of 110 kilometers per hour, which is about 68 miles per hour, according to police. Adding to this, the driver of the car was apparently asleep at the time.

Officers found that the Tesla driver was reclining in the seat with his eyes closed and his hands off the steering wheel," police say.

This strengthened the suspicion that he had left the controls to the autopilot and had fallen asleep," police added. The 45-year-old driver of the Tesla eventually woke up and followed police instructions. Police noted that the man "showed drug-typical abnormalities during the check-up."

Adding to this, police reportedly found a "steering wheel weight" in the vehicle's footwell. Such a device is used to trick Tesla's safety systems into thinking a driver's hands remain on a wheel so that the autopilot remains active, according to the police's release.

That idiot really wanted to catch some sleep. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wakes up dead someday.

Does Tesla autopilot keep the car in the right lane?

If so, I’m all for everyone but me driving a Tesla.

If I have to stay awake and keep my hands on the wheel, I would just as soon drive the car myself. I have driven over a million miles without autopilot and it has worked out just fine. I like to be in control of the car. I think autopilot would make it easier to be distracted in case I did need to take over. If I am not comfortable with autopilot while awake, I can’t even imagine being able to go to sleep on purpose while the car drives itself.

= = =

New cars are so smooth and computer aided with cruise that adjusts for cars in front, and wipers and auto dimming lights, etc. that I can get bored with my hands on the wheel.

Need to drive on the edge, where constant driver is needed. That keeps them awake.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he wakes up dead someday.”

One good thing about waking up dead is that you can’t smell your unpleasant body odor because you’re no longer breathing.

But when “waking up dead”, one loses bladder control...

The situation wouldn’t be a pleasant one entirely then, would it.
