He had made it through four years of denials and appeals, and Robert Heard was finally before a Social Security judge who would decide whether he qualified for disability benefits. Two debilitating strokes had left the 47-year-old electrician with halting speech, an enlarged heart and violent tremors.
There was just one final step: A vocational expert hired by the Social Security Administration had to tell the judge if there was any work Heard could still do despite his condition. Heard was stunned as the expert canvassed his computer and announced his findings: He could find work as a nut sorter, a dowel inspector or an egg processor - jobs that virtually no longer exist in the United States.
But while the judge agreed that Heard had multiple, severe impairments, he denied him benefits, writing that he had "job opportunities" in three occupations that are nearly obsolete and agreeing with the expert's dubious claim that 130,000 positions were still available sorting nuts, inspecting dowels and processing eggs.

At a guess, I’d say that most of the nut sorting jobs are here in New England.
That is insanity. Government is completely corrupt.
This makes me so angry. Our money and our government.
How often is that said to the myriad of people who milk the system with some BS "disability"? Almost never. The "free money" rolls in.
In Washington State we have the highest unemployment benefits in the country. $122,653 a year for a couple with two dependents. And you don’t have to work as a nut sorter to get it.

Part of this story forms the premise of a movie I consider quite good: “Renaissance Man”, w/ Danny DeVito. The analogy breaks down, obviously, but it does go to the issue.

IMO the multitude of malingers crowd out many with legitimate problems.
That amount depends on the state, and on one’s earnings when disabled. Unemployment is 2/3 of one’s pay check and you have to pay taxes on it. I’ve never known them to pay out according to dependents.
I was born in 1947, and raised in Rochester, New York. There was a French's Mustard factory there until 1987. With a straight face, my mother used to tell people she had a job working at the French's factory, and then told them: "Yeah, picking the mouse turds out of the mustard seeds."
For a while I worked in an office where one of the staff tried to assist persons who were denied SS Disability. This one gentleman had 2 or 3 conditions, maladies (cancer, emphysema, etc). He was also a Vietnam vet. After witnessing many similar denials, it appears they deny almost everyone, and then sees who appeals. Disgusting.

My understanding is, that all changed under 0bama, and many millions of able-bodied people who COULD actually work, were being approved for benefits. I personally know several people, who have been milking this system for years.
Violent tremors is not a good mix with egg processing or nut sorting.
In 2018, there was an estimated 76 job openings for dowel inspectors. That’s for the entire nation.
The article doesn’t state which state the man applied from, nor does it say that he can appeal.
Even after all of that, if he does win on appeal, he won’t recei e all of the benefits due him. They will screw him out of 3 1/2 years worth and only pay him 6 months worth.
I rember a man on another forum who had severe kidney failure. He was from Texas, and they kept him from receiving any benefits for years, and he was on dialysis. He finally got approved and ended up with a kidney/pancreas transplant. Diabetes is what killed his kidneys.
Talk about irony.
A man who lives 2 doors away from me was denied social security for a long time after having a kidney removedfrom kidney cancer.
I know many people who’ve been denied despite ongoing disabilities. All of them are men.
He was told to get a desk job. No one would hire him because of liability if he passed out and was injured at work. He went through several hearings and finally got a lawyer for free. It took another year but he finally got it.
The man was an electrician. He made a good income. WTF?
There are disability lawyers that know the
ins and outs of the system, and they don’t
require a fee unless you win your case.
Sounds like this guy was representing
himself.
There’s also a two year wait from the time
the ssa approves your case and the first
benefit amount hits your bank account. I
was a bum for those two years, relying on
family members for basic needs. Can’t buy
toothpaste or toilet paper with food stamps.
I guess I am in the minority here. There are many, many, many folks on the disability dole who could indeed do various jobs, even if not the sort of work they had done originally — and IMO they should be expected to do so ahead of being on the perpetual taxpayer-funded dole.
Yes, many sitting factory jobs would work for some. Or from home customer support positions, included bot/text support if for whatever reason they can’t handle speaking on a phone.
I am not in a position to judge this particular man’s situation, but I know there are many “on disability” who lead full and active lives unfairly funded by others.
