NASA mulls SpaceX backup plan for crew of Russia's leaky Soyuz ship

NASA and Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, are investigating the cause of a punctured coolant line on an external radiator of Russia's Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, which is supposed to return its crew of two cosmonauts and one U.S. astronaut to Earth early next year.

But the Dec. 14 leak, which emptied the Soyuz of a vital fluid used to regulate crew cabin temperatures, has derailed Russia's space station routines, with engineers in Moscow examining whether to launch another Soyuz to retrieve the three-man team that flew to ISS aboard the crippled MS-22 craft.

It was unclear what NASA specifically asked of SpaceX's Crew Dragon capabilities, such as whether the company can find a way to increase the crew capacity of the Dragon currently docked to the station, or launch an empty capsule for the crew's rescue.

SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule, a gumdrop-shaped pod with four astronaut seats, has become the centerpiece to NASA's human spaceflight efforts in low-Earth orbit. Besides Russia's Soyuz program, it is the only entity capable of ferrying humans to the space station and back.

NASA should have already thought of this and had it planned in advance and ready to go. NASA has fallen so low... Just like the rest of the nation.

Remember a few months ago, when the Russians were making snarky remarks about America going to space with pogo sticks?

Karma is a bitch.

Doesn’t NASA need Peter strok’s approval before working with Elon Musk’s/SpaceX? Because you know, Russia...., and he once worked for the FBI?

Where’s outcry from the liberals at NYT, WAPO, because, you know....Twitter....!

Can’t wait for Merrick Gartland and Chris Ray to weigh in, because you know..... they’re corrupt!

Rember Apolloi 13 when Nasa jumped through all the hoops to bring them home safely?

Then think of the Columbia shuttle when after they knew there was damage on take off and Nasa said something to the extent “aw hell bring them home. Let’s see what happens.

Since then we have had muslim outreach, diversity and gawd knows what else.

Things haven’t gotten any better...

The article is written in bizarre fashion.

For about 10 years after the Shuttle program ended, Soyuz was the only launch vehicle capable of carrying crew to and from the ISS. The US manned space program was 100% reliant on Soyuz.

Now a Soyuz capsule has a leak, apparently from a meteoroid strike associated with the Geminid shower, according to Space.com.

RosCosmos will decide by the end of December whether or not a replacement Soyuz need be launched to ferry two cosmonauts and one US astronaut back to Earth adding 45 days to the schedule, or whether the damaged Soyuz is adequately safe to perform the descent on present schedule. There is no evidence of any other damage than loss of coolant.

SpaceX was not scheduled to perform this ferry task and still is not.

Watch - Space x will retrofit a vehicle to get them home.

They’ll accuse Elon of being a Russian conspirator.

Check out behindtheblack.com. Also Robert Zimmerman, who created behindtheblack, appears on the John Batchelor Show / podcast. You can scroll the behindtheblack website for the podcasts, very informative on this situation.

This is sort of the point.

There is no urgency. No emergency. The 45 day delay would be just fine. No need to make some unapproved change in order to launch another SpaceX when . . . well, first, that Soyuz can still fly after a meteoroid strike and second, another is only 45 days out, and there’s plenty of food and air aboard — and even that doesn’t matter because the unmanned Russian supply rockets have been supplying the ISS for over a decade. It could resupply again.

This is not a big deal.
