Similar story - this past summer the lady who was my mom’s daytime caregiver came in at 8 and said that there was a “weenie dog” running up and down the main road in front of the neighborhood about a mile away. I left here at one and when I got to that area he was still there, running down the middle of the road. Found the owners after looking for a couple of weeks, but they had moved and he didn’t go with them.
He has issues - lipomas, terrible teeth, (ugh) separation anxiety, heart murmur, - vet says he’s 12 or 13. So I’ve had his teeth cleaned and the biggest lipoma removed.
My grandson rescued a quail from his cat - we are treating him for an infection in his leg from the cat bite - but after 3 weeks he’s about the same so we may take him to the wildlife rescue up near Birmingham.
Part of living in the sticks, I suppose.
Also in the sticks. Rural places are dumping grounds for unwanted, old, and sick pets. God bless people with the heart to take them in.
A friend who lives in a rural area walked down to the mailbox with her dog one morning and they found this poor, bedraggled little Shih Tzu standing by the driveway, staring down the road. She tried to get him to come to her, but he was spooked and ran back and forth, still turning to look down the road. She said she knew then that someone had dumped him and which direction they had driven off.
After a lot of coaxing with treats, she finally got hold of him and took him in, got him bathed and cleaned up and did the requisite scan for chip (none) and even walking up and down the road asking other neighbors if they knew the dog.
She posted a video to Facebook several weeks later where she had him on a leash and walked him down to the mailbox and the dog would stop and sit at the end of the driveway, looking down the road for his people. She said he was the saddest, most depressed little guy she had ever met. She ended up handing him over to a foster for reasons I donāt recall, but that video was kind of heartbreaking.

Living in the sticks is awesome. I will have it no other way.
