The French Bulldog has won Best in Show at the 2022 National Dog Show.
Winston the French Bulldog beat out around 1,500 of dogs representing 212 breeds and varieties recognized by the American Kennel Club. First, he claimed victory in the Non-Sporting Group in a field of 20 breeds. He then took on the other six group winners before taking home the top honor. The English Toy Spaniel, winner of the Toy Group, was named Reserve Best in Show.
The German Shepherd Dog won the Herding Group; the Irish Water Dog won the Sporting Group; the American Staffordshire Terrier won the Terrier Group; the Tree Walking Coonhound won the Hound Group; and the Alaskan Malamute won the Working Group.
This year, three breeds made their National Dog Show debut. The Russian Toy joined the Toy Group. The breed has a curly coat that can be black, gray, brown, or fawn in color, sometimes with white markings. The Mudi, which falls under the Herding Group, was originally a Hungarian farm dog. The breed is agile, intelligent and courageous, making it perfect to work with livestock. The Bracco Italiano, also known as the Italian Pointing Dog, joined the Sporting Group. The breed is known for its adaptability in hunting and its intelligence.
NBC televised the 2022 National Dog Show directly after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the 21st straight year. Every year, more than 20 million people tune in for the event, which was commentated by longtime hosts John O’Hurley and David Frei. Mary Carillo also returned for more commentary, analysis and behind-the-scenes looks at one of the oldest dog shows in the world.
“Plott Hound is a better bear dog...”
Agreed. We also raise Plotts. We currently have three; two brown Brindle and one Maltese...and is he ever HANDSOME! ;)
But, surprisingly, the best bear dogs we have right now are both Treeing Walker Coonhounds.
Osage can pick up a cold track (like 10 hours old!) with regularity, and Taylor is right beside him all the way. And she NEVER gives up! Osage ran for 10 hours this season, on a bear and finally got him treed after it ran back and forth in the same section for all that time.
Right now, we really only have two Walker Dogs that are worth a spit for raccoon hunting, and while Beau hunts them on a regular basis, he’s more into bear now, than anything else.
Would be nice if raccoon pelts were worth anything these days!
Haven’t we all have had that one special animal that stays close to our hearts even if just a memory now? Always wanted a Basset Hound; your Walker in the photo above is stunning, truly a beautiful confirmation and attitude!
The Belgian Malinois is used extensively in the military and police. It is just the short coat version of the Tervuren. The short coat is better for hot climates. The long coats were better for Colorado winters, but the temperament and agility are all the same.
I saw a Belgian Sheepdog one time when I took my dog to the groomer. What a great face!
“The Belgian Malinois is used extensively in the military and police. “
The husband of a friend of mine had his truck stolen. The next day the county sheriff posted the story on facebook. It referenced that when the two thieves abandoned the truck and ran, one was arrested without incident. The other fled and was pursued by canine officer Gentry, who persuaded him to surrender “in a way only a Belgian Malinois can.”
Aren’t Frenchies the ones who can’t reproduce without human help?

Yep, Belgians are fast, strong and protective.
Waste of time to watch that show. They air about 1/3 of the dogs and spend little time on the ones they do show.
Beautiful dogs
The French Bulldog is a good looking puppy! Thanks for posting this, I’m not a dog person but I do enjoy watching this Show. Sadly, this year the votes of the household went to Football, and that other Football.
Happy Thanksgiving to all you fine Freepers!
The husky and the shih tzu never get any love
I had a toy fox terrier as a kid, and that’s the only breed of dog I’d consider getting now. But I don’t think my little rescue cat Zizu would go for a lively and clever dog in the house. My Maine Coon would probably welcome a playmate she could chase, but Zizu, no sale.
That is something I know nothing about.
Belgians are gorgeous and very very smart.
Leni
They are. It makes me think of when media people tried to tell me Renee Zellweger was hot. Same for Sarah Jessica Parker.
I’m sorry but I think bull dogs are ugly.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.......they may not be the prettiest dogs but the love they have for their owners is awesome....so are Bostons and Pugs. We have a weakness for flat-faced dogs......;)Our son has a Frenchie and he’s a mess......he calls the shots.....love those dogs. ;)
We’ve lived in the country for years and usually had a couple police/protection quality shepherds, and raised puppies until a few years ago, then ended up taking in a spayed female to give her a good home, and I bought a a younger black pup I hoped to raise pups from, but she didn’t have good hips.
Now we have a couple sable females with German lines and I’m hoping to make the world a better place by having great puppies...
And, I meant to say that I thought your Belgians and long haired shepherd were very beautiful!!!
