From my point of view, as an over 60, catholic, fairly conservative black guy, that term IS just as bad as the original, except in private and among friends.
I can put it in context. Reading it in Huck Finn is not going to bother me.
Those who say it’s okay are just trying to rationalize that exact same term. Admittedly, I am light years out of that demographic. Too old. Too square.
