I’m getting so tired of the Burleigh’s here ignoring history, so here’s the actual economic statistics of the two Presidents.
Reagan came to office in January 1981, with the 30-year mortgage around 13.15%, while Trump took office in January 2017 with the mortgage rate at 4.08%. In Reagan’s day, the Federal Reserve did not pump ludicrous amounts of money into the economy with asset purchases; in fact, the opposite was true. The Fed was tightening so tightly that Reagan lost the midterms badly because of it. Reagan had to endure two years of Volcker’s policies to fight inflation, so let’s pick his numbers up in 1983, while we’ll use Trump’s first three years, since Covid skews the results, no matter who was in the Oval Office.
At year-end 1980, Reagan faced this as he took office:
Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment
1980 <0.3>% 12.5% 7.2%
Then, when Volcker finally relented, we had this:
Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment
1983 4.6% 3.8% 10.8%
1984 7.2% 3.9% 7.3%
1985 4.2% 3.8% 7.0%
1986 3.5% 1.1% 6.6%
1987 3.5% 4.4% 7.7%
1988 4.2% 4.4% 5.3%
Trump comes into office after this 2016 performance:
Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment
2016 1.7% 2.1% 4.7%
For the 3 pre-Covid years, the numbers are as follows:
Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment
2017 2.3% 2.1% 4.1%
2018 2.9% 1.9% 3.9%
2019 2.3% 2.3% 3.6%
Trump had a Republican Congress when he took office, Reagan NEVER HAD a Republican House. When I went to work in April 1982, the stock market, which had not set an all-time high for SIXTEEN YEARS, was around 700. When Reagan left office, it was nearly 400% higher.
Anyone who thinks Trump’s claims of his having the ‘best economy ever’, is ignorant of what Reagan accomplished.
The comparison is silly and childish. Your mom is calling you
About 123% increase.
Easy, when Wall Street started demanding earnings increase all the time and leveraged buyouts started happening. One thing Reagan did not appreciate was how much wealth creation led to that. But for all the bluster of Trump, very little has come back here yet.
Ooh, that hurt! Did you wash your kneepads Nina? Trump is waiting.
Something that never gets mentioned is that Reagan had no talk radio, no Fox News, no conservative internet and news sources/blogs/podcasts, no conservative anything, and the Republican establishment also hated him and fought him.
At the time most of us didn’t even know that republicans could ever win congress since democrat control had reached permanent status.
How Reagan turned his campaign into a win, and then 4 years later won Massachusetts, Hawaii, Vermont, Washington, New York, New Hampshire, California, Maryland, New Jersey, and Maine and everything but Mondale’s home state, is a testimony to what a unifying president he was.
Use January 21st, 1981 and 1989. And remember, the Volcker interest rate punishment killed Reagan’s first two years. When I started on Wall Street in 1982, the P/E multiple of the Dow was about 7x earnings. The first two years the market went down due to Volcker’s rising rates.
Today’s Nina’s have no understanding of that period. We had only the WSJ, Washington Times and a few magazines. Today, Trump can go on YouTube and similar platforms and not have a filter between him and the voters.
You posted this, because you’re a DeSantis supporter.
They also forget that the Trump-GOP-E battle was just like:
Rockefeller-Goldwater
Reagan-Ford (Reagan takes on a sitting President and almost wins the nomination)
Reagan-Bush Sr.-Anderson (Reagan even had to overcome a 3rd-party Anderson Independent run)
The Nina’s think Trump is the only one who took on everyone.
I voted for Trump twice and represented him after the 2016 election on the broadcast Palm Beach Post Focus Group that was live on Facebook.
I believe in facts above all, and Trump’s economy was no match for Reagan’s, no matter who I decide to support in 2024. If Trump’s the nominee, I vote for him. Anyone else, I vote for him or her.
Deal with it. I became a conservative because of Reagan since my four college years were the Carter years. There’s no comparison between the two.
It’s stupid to compare the two. He was only President for 4 years.
It’s stupid to show facts about the relative economic performance of the two? Seriously? If Trump’s numbers were so great, why didn’t he win 49 states like Reagan did? Why was it so close that the election could have been taken?
And I didn’t even count the Covid year against him either.
Trump ain’t Reagan, deal with it.

He was President for 8 years. Trump was President for 4 years. Why didn’t he win 49 states? Because the Demographics were different in 1984 vs 2016 and 2020.
“”Reagan was the right President for the issues, problems, and opportunities of the 1980s.””
Exactly, you can compare the two men but you can’t compare the two different worlds, two different Americas, and the problems, challenges, and political and cultural differences/etc of their eras.
Who cares?
Reagan is dead and Trump isn’t.
Good luck running Reagan in the 2024 primaries, you’ll need it.
There were far more Dems than Repubs in 1980, the ratio is closer today, so that’s just false.
Reagan converted Dems just like Trump did. Reagan’s landslide is an achievement you can’t sneer at.
Trump angered Independents, Reagan was beloved when he left office.
What you can compare is how much more Reagan inspired a bigger percentage of the voters than Trump did. If Trump knew how to temper himself from his worst excesses, he would have cruised to re-election.
If you want to attack Trump or point out what you see as his shortcomings then you need to talk about him and whatever you want to say and document, but trying an impossible comparison of a 1980 president to the 2016 president just doesn’t work.
Everything was too different between those times.
Who cares? All the Nina’s here who actually believed the hype of ‘the greatest economy ever’, which is pure bullshit based on what Reagan had to overcome. Heck, Reagan didn’t even have the shale oil revolution available to him at that time.
What he did have was the ability to sell his economic policies in a way that Trump only dreams of.
Don’t get me wrong, Trump did a pretty good job, with help from the Federal Reserve’s easy money. But Reagan faced far more obstacles and those GDP numbers don’t lie. Trump’s BEST year fell far short of Reagan’s WORST for that 6-year period.
Sure, Reagan had the tougher environment when he took over, and I assume you are old enough to remember it.
He also did not have a starting point of military superiority, nor full acquiescence of Europe (remember the anti-missile sentiment?).
He built ALL of that with Thatcher.
Trump had it a LOT easier as a starting point and I don’t see how the sycophants here can argue that.
