I’m getting so tired of the Burleigh’s here ignoring history, so here’s the actual economic statistics of the two Presidents.
Reagan came to office in January 1981, with the 30-year mortgage around 13.15%, while Trump took office in January 2017 with the mortgage rate at 4.08%. In Reagan’s day, the Federal Reserve did not pump ludicrous amounts of money into the economy with asset purchases; in fact, the opposite was true. The Fed was tightening so tightly that Reagan lost the midterms badly because of it. Reagan had to endure two years of Volcker’s policies to fight inflation, so let’s pick his numbers up in 1983, while we’ll use Trump’s first three years, since Covid skews the results, no matter who was in the Oval Office.
At year-end 1980, Reagan faced this as he took office:
Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment
1980 <0.3>% 12.5% 7.2%
Then, when Volcker finally relented, we had this:
Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment
1983 4.6% 3.8% 10.8%
1984 7.2% 3.9% 7.3%
1985 4.2% 3.8% 7.0%
1986 3.5% 1.1% 6.6%
1987 3.5% 4.4% 7.7%
1988 4.2% 4.4% 5.3%
Trump comes into office after this 2016 performance:
Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment
2016 1.7% 2.1% 4.7%
For the 3 pre-Covid years, the numbers are as follows:
Year Real GDP Inflation Unemployment
2017 2.3% 2.1% 4.1%
2018 2.9% 1.9% 3.9%
2019 2.3% 2.3% 3.6%
Trump had a Republican Congress when he took office, Reagan NEVER HAD a Republican House. When I went to work in April 1982, the stock market, which had not set an all-time high for SIXTEEN YEARS, was around 700. When Reagan left office, it was nearly 400% higher.
Anyone who thinks Trump’s claims of his having the ‘best economy ever’, is ignorant of what Reagan accomplished.
Early-Greco-Roman
Really? McCain, Ryan and the traitors.
All voted in by the same voters who voted in Trump.

From an academic angle I give you credit for pointing this out. But we are comparing 2 types of electorates. Objectively today voters on average are much stupider. Even Democrat voters of the Reagan age were at least intelligent enough to discuss facts and not feelings back then. We are also witnessing a media that has gone all in with the Democrat Party. And I argue voters have made a wide swing to the left since the 1980s.
Reagan also somehow did not get blamed for continuing the destructive policy of trade with China.
So what you’re saying is Obama did one heck of a good job. LMAO
There wasn’t nearly that much trade with China as there is today in Reagan’s day. China’s GDP was miniscule in the 80’s. Reagan had to fight JAPAN’s trade surplus, not China’s.

Reagan’s economy ain’t what I’m comparing Trump’s economy to. The stark difference between now and two years ago is the comparison to make. Besides a good chunk of the populace wasn’t even alive when Reagan was POTUS.
Presidents have very little direct control over how the economy is doing at the moment they are in office, other than choosing whether to crash it or not. Praising trump because the NASDAQ was doing well when he was in office is as dumb as praising Obama or Clinton for the same thing. I see very little reason to rate Trump as better than Reagan especially since time hasn’t moved far along enough for an objective comparison to be made. I’m not holding my breath.
Wow! A Fetterman voter! Must be to say something that stupid on a thread comparing Reagan and Trump.
The only moron on here is you clown.
unemployment for women - lowest EVER
unemployment for blacks - lowest EVER
unemployment for hispanics - lowest EVER
People’s “economy” - best EVER
But some of us were adults during Reagan, and know how much better the economy was under him.
Still he continued a horrible policy that the traitor Nixon established. Reagan also did NOTHING about 200 dead marines and stood by while the world chastised Rushdie for his exercise of free speech. Just saying Reagan was not perfect by any measure.
Sure pal! Employed at much lower real wages than back then. Hamburger flipping anyone? Reagan still had higher paying blue collar jobs back then.
You’re claiming Obama handed Trump a great economy? Hahaha
They were much more stupid
1980’s Greatest Generation was still alive to tell boomers how its done.
2016, Boomers still around to tell Millennials how its done.
Also, is there a square cube law to economics?
I know the absolute numbers of the Stock market are much higher.
Says the guy who invented Obama in this thread!
