This is the moment that a heroic German shepherd rushed to protect its young owner after a neighbor's dog got loose and charged at the youngster.

The six-year-old boy was playing on his front lawn with his dog, Tank, at his South Florida home when the hound suddenly made a frightening beeline for him on November 8.

According to the boy's father, the neighbor's dog started charging toward his son.

The family pet, Tank, a one-year-old German shepherd, sensed the boy was in danger and swiftly jumped into action to protect his best friend.

Tank's guarding instinct kicked into overdrive as he pushed the boy out of harm's way and then stood over him before confronting the other canine.

In the shocking clip, the tearful little boy can be seen running towards his mother as his dad rushed onto the scene to break up the doggie scuffle.

After both of the dogs bark, growl and charge at one another, the neighbor's dog finally ran home.

Years ago mom and dad had a German Shepherd and poodle who were inseparable.

One week they went to their cottage in northern Michigan on vacation and one day the dogs wandered off into the woods and obviously got lost.

Dad spent three days driving the logging trails trying to find them and even left his jacket on the side of one trail in the hopes the dogs would find it and stay by it. Unfortunately somebody found the jacket and took it.

On the evening of the third day, they went into the little one gas station, one bar town and went into the bar for dinner. There behind the bar were the two dogs sleeping. They had wandered into town and the bar owner, who knew my parents, took them in and rescued them.

The dogs had one hell of an adventure because both had porcupine quills in their faces and had tangled with a skunk and lost.......LOL!

If that were me, I’d be explaining to my neighbor that the next time his dog comes onto my property and acts aggressively, that I’d medicate at 9mm per dose.

As an EMT, I had a patient who had been savaged by a German Shepherd she had just adopted. Fortunately she was a tall strong woman and fought it off, and she had decided to train it at friend’s place before bringing it home to her two small children. She kept telling the police, “Shoot it, just shoot it!”

The best dogs I knew as a child were GSD, but they became popular with mean tough guys in the seventies, before pit bulls became the breed of choice, and maybe they are not to be trusted, except from reliable breeders.

Reliable breeders still select for those stupid unhealthy dropped hips, though.

We’ve got a four-month old Long Haired Black and Red GSD who is a furry ballistic puppy missile and makes us laugh. It’s our third Deutscher Schäferhund, and I can’t imagine life without one...they really capture your heart.
