Shower thoughts explained! Scientists figure out why we get great ideas while washing
Study Finds ^ | Chris Melore

Many people have been in the shower when that brilliant, light bulb moment suddenly strikes! It can seem like a strange place to have great ideas, but researchers say “shower thoughts” are pretty common. So, why do so many people get a spark of creativity while washing up?

While previous research has suggested that people get more creative when their mind wanders, a new study finds that those mindless tasks (like showering) aren’t so mindless after all.

The new study challenges past research that seemed to prove what many scientists thought about letting the mind wander. That study found that when people perform “undemanding” tasks, the brain tends to wander. When that happens, creativity starts to flow.

I have had several good ideas come to me sitting in rush hour traffic or during a relaxing drive. Walking and showering also are good for coming up with ideas.

Sometimes you just have to step away from the job to see the problem better.

If your pelvic floor is disturbed the main thought you have in the shower is “I really need to pee.”

Entrepreneur: I had a great idea in the shower and built a $10 million business

Scientist: got any more of that grant money? I’d like to get paid to not produce anything while studying what everyone already knows.

When I was still working, I would plan out my day while in the shower and convince myself to do what I had been putting off. It actually worked.

However, now that I'm retired, no matter what I plan out in the shower, it never seems to get done........LOL!

Prehistoric waterfall skinny dipping probably led to the invention of the shower, y'know, eventually. What slowed the whole thing down was, the first man who tried it wanted to get a woman to join him under the waterfall...

"A brisk but fairly brief walk helps me to think."

Me too.
That's why I make it a habit to carry a notepad and pencil while walking.
Just in case the brain shifts into gear unexpectedly.
Ya never know - I does occasionally happen...

A research project that makes sense? Yikes that takes me back...

Same here. I like to walk an hour or two a day alone. Maybe catch up on a podcast or just listen to the sounds of nature around me. When others walk with me, it becomes more of a chore because you feel obligated to keep up a conversation. Plus I like to go on walks spontaneously, not at a set time each day.

During my walks, I often see small groups of housewives in the neighborhood trying to start a walking routine, usually after the New Year and after the kids get picked up for school. You can hear them chattering away even before you see them. That never lasts more than a few weeks. It seems they get tired listening to each other too.

I ran for a public office in 2006. During the campaign I took my family to dinner. I was recognized from a tv ad I had run by a nice family. We had a very pleasant exchange that made me extremely uncomfortable. Afterward I said to my wife “fame sucks”. She said I was an incurable loner. Fortunately I lost the election, having learned a valuable lesson about myself. For the first time, I embrace my passion for solitude.

It’s called “benign neglect” sometimes when you step away and do another activity, suddenly a solution comes to you.
