Rational owners look at factual statistics and make a realistic decision about what kind of pet has the lowest possibility of doing harm in relation to their ability to discipline an animal with strong killer instincts, especially if they have children.
Pit bulls top the list, by a wide margin. Please hear what people are trying to tell you -- that breed was developed for fighting and killing. It's genetic. There are some things humans just aren't smarter than at all times. DNA is one of them.
“...but I wouldn’t want a dog that combines those jaw muscles...”
Pit Bull jaw strength: 240-330 psi
German Shepherd: 240 - 290
Golden Retriever: 190
Human: 100 - 150
Final reply to all the PB haters.
When I was kid among the many pets we had over the years were a Black Mane South African Lioness, Ocelots, a Coatimundi, Raccoon, Skunk, very large Iguana, Red-Tail Hawks, Ferret (The only vicious animal, wild caught) and more dog breeds than I could catalog.
Never a problem with any but the Ferret which we eventually released as it could not be tamed.
A neighbors house-cat had a habit of going nuts and attacking people at random, it got put down.
We have rescued several “Vicious” dogs and all responded to decent treatment very quickly.
Some people should not be allowed even a Parakeet, and no one is forcing anyone to have a PB.
So stop with the know it all broad brush already, none of you are going to convince that any of my several PB’s that I miss so much were the Devil incarnate.
If “Hunting Breed” = EVIL as so many here are claiming then MOST breeds would be unmanageable.
Do not bother responding, I am done with the haters.
Does that mean you'll finally stop your gaslighting on this thread?
According to the American Kennel Club the number one breed is mixed but the number one pure bred is the Labrador Retriever. The Pit does not make the top eight.
Your personal experience is not a universal reality applicable to all PB situations. People who are realistic in assessing the risks of owning the breed are not haters. You are overdefensive for a reason. Ask yourself why.
Yes, that was Jake the Hyena. He was a gay guy that bought a hyena pup in New York and said he did stripping one night and got the thousand to buy him, then brought him back to Miami.

LOL! Maine Coon Cats are great. We had one — a real comedienne. Gorgeous.
Very sad. The reporting on such tragedies leaves too many loose ends.
They communicate telepathically, I found!
I still haven’t found anything in the news about the attack in TN I recounted. Maybe my friend will give me a name, and I’ll find something. Here’s another attack from last month, but not the same guy — the one I know about was an attack by someone else’s loose pit bulls, and as far as I know was not a fatal attack, though the man was severely injured.

“They communicate telepathically”
Interesting that you’d say that. My Maine Coon, Duchess, was able to “read” me, especially when I was not well. I called her an empath, but that may not be the correct word. After surgeries or when I was otherwise under the weather she wouldn’t leave my side — my feet, actually.
I have a plain short-hair tabby, Maris Crane, who I call my nurse. If I’m such in bed ill, she sleeps by my feet. If I get up to use the restroom, she sits up by my pillow until I return. Then she’ll lie by my pillow and purr until I’m asleep or almost asleep, get up and go back by my feet again.
We had a cat that was friendly with my wife and kids, but she would never get up on my lap or anything. She would tolerate me petting her on the floor, and I could pick her up, but she never came up and just sat on my lap.
I came home after a very close call in the woods (a stick in my neck). While waiting to get hold of a doctor (I wasn’t bleeding, but was told by a country doctor that there could be unseen damage and the artery might burst) I was laying on the couch.
That cat came up and laid on my stomach! Never had done it before, or since.
I like to think it somehow knew I needed some comfort.
Either that, or it was waiting for me to die so it could eat me!
Almost every week now, it seems these animals are mauling and killing.

I hope your friend is coping well, because it’s going take some time. Nightmares, PTSD.
There is a humane way of culling these kinds of dogs, such as castration, spaying, or breeding with other dogs not so volatile, but the MSM keep pushing the breed along with organizations like Pitbulls and Parolees, and the nanny dog fantasy. I haven’t had cable in six years so I may be behind the times on that.
They know.
The American Pit Bull Terrier is only 1 breed of the 4 bull terriers. The others are the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Stratfordshire Bull Terrier, and the American Bully.
People who think cats aren’t loyal or smart like dogs don’t know what they’re missing, right? Cats just aren’t pushovers. You need to court them.
Again, I couldn't find out anything online in the media, no mention of the attack whatsoever. The man's name is Michael ("Mike") Lane. He was in his 60's, and was fond of going on long walks for fitness. Unfortunately that's a fairly common name and I don't have his address, so my searches are limited.
