Vladimir Putin today came under stinging criticism from his own side after Russia was forced to withdraw troops from a key Ukrainian city this afternoon as Ukraine's eastern counteroffensive recaptures more territory.
Ukrainian forces encircled the strategic eastern city of Lyman on Saturday in a counteroffensive that has humiliated the Kremlin, while Russian bombardments intensified after Moscow illegally annexed a swath of Ukrainian territory in a sharp escalation of the war.
Russia's own Tass and RIA news agencies announced that troops have fled Lyman, citing the Russian defence ministry.
It comes after the Russian President Vladimir Putin was pictured grinning and laughing yesterday after he annexed four Ukrainian regions following what the West has blasted as sham referendums.
The bitter blame game revealed a deep split among the most vocal backers of Putin's military conflict and his top brass, notably defence minister Sergei Shoigu and chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
It showed key players in the Putin camp turning on each other, implicitly criticising Putin for sticking by failed commanders.
Military commander and normally loyalist MP Andrey Gurulev claimed the Russian forces were heroes led by self-serving donkeys, he said: 'I cannot explain this surrender in military terms.
'The problem is a system of lies, reports of a good situation [when the reality is bad].
'This rot comes from the top down.'

Interesting bit about this war I’d that neither Russia nor Ukraine plays up or even identifies the unit commanders.
This is the precise opposite of US propaganda/journalism going back to the US Civil War. Remember that American armies in the Civil War were accompanied by “embedded” reporters, and these people made Grant, McLellan, etc. household names. Similarly in 1898 (Dewey, Roosevelt), WWI, WWII, etc. Remember Schwarzkopfs daily briefings?
Even enemies were given celebrity. Rommel was a household name among the Allies.
But both sides here emphasize anonymity.
If you don’t like the news, attack the messenger.
But still, you are not disputing what is reported. To check on the report, you can check the sources, which are given.
But is it true?
You may not like what they are saying, but it is childish to reject it if it is factual.
Red Square had a lot more dignity before they put jumbotrons in for events. The Russians sure were disrespectful of those Russian flags that were handed out to wave. Photos showed them tossed on the ground and tossed into waste bins.
Think of the old ‘Wild World of Sports’ intro... The thrill of victory, etc.
The sooner that beast is terminated, the better.
The headlines are made that way on purpose because they are made for propaganda reasons. They know very few will actually read the story following.
“...Even enemies were given celebrity. Rommel was a household name among the Allies...”
You bring up some interesting facts.
B.H. Liddell Hart makes some points about giving celebrity to commanders. In THE GERMAN GENERALS TALK, he makes a case that the relatively young Rommel and the much older von Rundstedt were given lots of publicity by Hitler/Goebbels while equally important generals were often “soldiers in the shadow”. There was a certain image the Nazis wanted to project and von Manstein, Halder, Kluge, and many others did not present that image.
🇺🇸 Thanks for the post !
Have been tracking all 3 tac phases of UA recapture of Lyman, and based on ground targeting reports (both sides), as well as POC’s on the ground, and NEW known ground tac dynamics, this report is not only correct, but many of the orc fighters are either dead, or fleeing East.
While taking significant daily losses, Russian 8th and 10th Army regulars had actually been trying to flee over the past near month, but also faced potential death from both RU (and UA SF) further East along their last egress route. RUbe ground CDR’s knew they couldn’t hold the critical supply rail head at Lyman, but sacrificed a bunch more regulars trying. In a last ditch effort to not lose every bbn last soldier, the RUbes tried to exfill the remaining RUbe 8th and 10th Army regulars, but could only do it as fast as *recent RUbe cannon fodder could be rounded up across RU and it’s subordinate CIS, thrown on “draft busses”, given a Korean War uniform, and sent to the front. Once dumped in Lyman, this provided the tiny exfill window for the remaining few RUbe 8th and 10th Army regulars to literally run East. Some of the RUbe 10th Army who didn’t make it, had been involved in this AOR for 8 years.
These were/are known elements of the Russian 8th and 10th army, and “Wagner mercs”.
Russian 10th Army regulars had been dug in (literally) for a long time.
Again, RUbe 8th and 10th army regulars, and Wagner group merc’s, have for weeks been getting smashed (very high death counts), have regrouped/consolidated several times, were never able to hold “center defensive” positions, or form meaningful “tac flanks”, and have been trying to flee, but were ordered and waiting for the non-regular/non-trained cannon fodder arrivals from RU and it’s subordinate CIS to infill, so some of the remaining surviving regulars could escape East — так что выжившая армия может попытаться сбежать на восток.
Many of the locals who were forced to fight either fled, were dead months ago, or were sent South.
Based on *Russian fire/targeting reports and poc’s, Ukraine has been predominately fighting Russian regulars on these specific enclave lines (which were a month ago secondary defensive lines, or even regional “aor HQ’s, supply and feeders”).
Russian ground officers have known all along, once these highly defended enclaves and LOC’s fall, UA would more quickly sweep another 15km to 40km both to the North and East (depending on tac set ups with other units), which is precisely why Russian 8th and 10th couldn’t just flee to the East and regroup. RU has been really beat, and lost a lot here. Many of their best trained are dead (including some who had been rotational for 8 years, and Ukraine did this without many of the op tools we would have used.
UA is really putting up a fight. 🇺🇦
As well, even in these area’s, as UA retakes RUbe occupier territory, they are finding many dead and tortured civilian locals, with some of the locals showing them where the bodies are. Much more (including from combined EU and Asain international forensic teams) will come out on this going forward.
But UA knows well Russia is not done, and that this fight may well include Russian nukes, will get significantly worse, and there is no quitting.

A month ago, I watched Russian news footage of “Special Police” (малиция with FSB), which were sent to Moscow’s new skyscraper financial district, where they rounded up and arrested dozens of Russia’s richest oligarchs, into very unusual looking vehicles. Some of these guys were literally in chains on camera.
No news since then.
Well, great run guys...
“its a slaughter”
8:19 am, October 1st, Eastern Ukraine
Only a few mins here. Ran out of ammo and backed off south. Am a bit traumatized and need some sleep. I have no idea what is going on except we engaged a lot of elements headed to Kreminna. They have to be coming from Lyman and Zarichne. Right now we are in a safe area, it seems.
I have never seen so many dead, soon to be dead, and wounded people in my life. People begging for help, but no way we can help them. We have little to help them with, a small medical kit each, no morphine, and no time to render any kind of useful aid. No idea if they will live or die. You just keep moving.
One guy had obviously stepped on a mine by the side of the road. One leg was gone at mid-thigh, the other one was broken lower down and his foot was backward. He was trying to crawl somewhere on one good knee, trailing flowing blood out of a busted artery. Unless he got help quick, he was gone. He was talking calmly in Russian, saying over-and-over, “I will be home soon mother.”

As a Believer, I don’t uwe the term Karma as it really conveys something other than a real Creator God is in control.
So NO chance at all involved in this real and gruesome reporting from the ground.
But consider, just about 4 days ago, a group of actual AID (including medical) workers near Zaporizhzhya in Southern UA (where one of my American missionary friends is located), were stopped at a Soviet style checkpoint by Russian 10th Army regulars, and lined up on the road headed South, when every last one of these civilian AID WORKERS were shot and blown to pieces by 7.62 and 20mm guns.
And this happened on a morning when at least a dozen Russian missiles hit apartment buildings around the Northern outskirts of Zaporizhzhya.
Most of these people don’t have weao ok nd, and are not fighting the Russians.
The imagery from the dead AID workers showed the bodies and blood.
One of the woman looked like a beautiful teenage girl, and her legs were backwards, and arm completely blown off. In other words, she was targeted and hit several times.
There wasn’t an armed person there.
This is satanic to the core! ⚔
“Think of the old ‘Wild World of Sports’ intro... The thrill of victory, etc.”
WIDE World of Sports. That was a good program back in the day.
That’s true. Omar Bradley was a very competent general, but he didn’t have Patton’s swagger or Eisenhower’s easy delivery.
Rissian fighters stepping on their own mine’s...
Been a bit of that going on lately.
Good chance these Russian fighters were new to the area’s being dumped off in.
Horrible. Just horrible about the aid workers.
