This song from Jelly Roll came out of nowhere earlier this year and has gotten massive airplay on country radio.
Is this a genuine country song? I think it is.
Modern country music is often criticized for its blandness, its mediocrity, or famously derided by Tom Petty as "bad rock with a fiddle".
Well I think Tom Petty would have liked this song. It's down to earth and from the heart. It's a song (as I interpret it) about hitting rock bottom and finding the will to climb out of it.
When it first came on the radio early this past summer, it did not at first appeal to me. But each subsequent listen was rewarded.
I don't know much about Jelly Roll. Apparently he is more of a rapper than a country artist. But don't judge him on that. Give this song a listen or two. I believe you will come around to it.
Re-posted the right links this time!
I like Jelly Roll. My favorite is ‘Dead Man Walking’, but this one is good. The dude has some serious issues though...some of his stuff is so nihilistic and wallowing in depression and an inability to control his behavior.
If I’m gonna listen to a dude with mental issues, Falling In Reverse is more my speed. And for all that guy’s problems, he’s a little more fun about it and at least some of his songs have a light at the end of the tunnel. Different kind of music though.
Much better than the one yesterday. š
Probably because that one is more along the vein of Rap, while the one he presented could be considered country.
Yes, from an obscure German band (Lake) to Jelly Roll. I have quite a range when it comes to music.
And just like that, The old band “Jelly Roll” is erased from history by someone who robbed their name. Anyone else remember the old original Jelly Roll?
Anyone else remember the old original Jelly Roll?
Morton? Heard him all the time growing up.
From 1926!
No, I am familiar with Morton. This was a Rock band in the 70s. Their best hit was “Jelly Roll” from their one album.
They were a one hit wonder, but they did exist on 8 track. Now I can’t even find any references for them at all. And now this artist just made sure we never will by stealing their name.
But they were actually pretty darned good, and deserved much more than what they got.
I love Jelly Roll.
I listen to a lot of his music.
Iām more of a whiskey Meyers kind of guy. https://youtu.be/Gj7Zft8aiRc
Was it by chance this band? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5jkVetgtdY
The Jelly Roll I remember was black and a blues artist. Also old rural black slang for a penis was “jelly roll”. No idea where this guy came from, but there’s plenty I have no idea about. He’s got a good voice, anyway.
Apparently Jason's mother gave him the nickname Jelly Roll when he was a young, chubby kid.
So that's how he got the name. His mom gave it to him.
Here’s the Jelly Roll I heard of, sounds more like jazz than blues, but what’s in a title.

Great photos in that video. This song was on an old 78 record from nearly 100 years ago. 1926 to be exact.
What a different world that was.

I have searched youtube several times over the last 5 years for them... Apparently Jellyroll-Jellyroll was not working as a search term! Or any other I tried.
Fantastic! thank you! The FUNK days are back...
Bookmarked!
Please see #18 man... Fantastic!, someone found it!
Seriously thank you... Are you listening? Not bad at all for the day and age. I am a musician and wanted to reload this album and make it retro... :)
