China kept the one-child policy in place at least 15 years too long. They recently reported that they had over counted their population by 100+ million people. All of them since one-child was put in place and most of them female.
Even if NOTHING else changes in the world, China could well lose half its population in the next 35 years. If you think having too many people is an economic problem it pales in comparison to the economic havoc of a aging and falling population. I don’t see the CCP surviving another 15 years even in a best-case, for them, situation.
Back to oil. Let's start with Russia. The largest single part of the Russian economy is based on exporting Oil & Natural Gas. They produce 5-6bbpd (billion barrels per day) of oil. World production is ~98bbpd. Almost all of it is located away from population areas and below the permafrost. (As an aside, one of the most productive oil wells in the US is located in a shopping mall on Wiltshire Blvd. in Los Angeles.) If Russia can't export its oil the pressure in the system will back up to the well heads and they are forced to shut off the pumps to save the pipelines. At that point the underground pressure will build up until the well casings crack.
At that point those wells are gone forever. The wells will have to be re-drilled which will take 10-15 years because they can only drill in the winter. The Russians do not have the technical expertise to do this. Think Halliburton & Schlumberget and they have left Russia over the Ukraine invasion.
And now to China. For those worried that China will have a go at Taiwan, I'm not. The Russian experience in Ukraine has scared the CCP to its roots. They have seen what government sanctions can do but it is the corporate and individual reactions that scare them the most. They had no idea that non-government actions could hurt a nation the way they have hurt Russia. China lives, and dies, by trade.
China imports 85% of its petroleum and about 85% of that passes through the Straits of Malacca. There are only two other straits, Sunda & Lombok, that their oil can pass through without having to travel around Australia. The three straits have a combined width of about 50NM. Six frigates in the Indian Ocean and I can cut off that oil and there is not a damn thing China can do about it.
Oil is not the only critical resource. They import well over half of the raw materials and sub-components for their manufacturing sector. If you cut off their imports you effectively cut off their exports. You don't even need military action to do this. If you declare an economic blockade you will be hard pressed to find merchant ships willing to go to and from Chinese ports because of high insurance rates and the risk of having their ships seized.
If you cut off China’s trade, in & out, in three weeks their economy starts to die. In six weeks the lights start to go out. At that point the CCP is in deep trouble. Almost all economic decisions by the CCP are designed to prevent internal unrest. In three months they can’t move food or anything else around inside the country and people start to die in large numbers.
Does anyone think the CCP would survive this? I don't. One year after trade is cut off and China could easily lose 400-600 million people, mostly the very young, very old, and CCP officials.
