Disguised Eli Manning Goes Undercover, Tries Out For Penn State Football
Sports Illustrated ^ | September 22, 2022 | John Macon Gillespie

No one has ever doubted Eli Manning's talent. Chad Powers, on the other hand? That's a different story.

The former Ole Miss Rebels quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion went undercover under the persona of "Chad Powers" recently and went through tryouts with the Penn State Nittany Lions. The process was documented on ESPN+ where Manning has a show titled "Eli's Places" that explores college football.

"One of the guys that you guys are competing with has been disqualified for two reasons," Penn State head coach James Franklin said. "His testing numbers were awful, but on top of that, we found out he's ineligible. Chad Powers, you're ineligible."

"I thought I had it boys," Manning said as he removed his disguise. "I'm sorry. I'm just a 41-year old who wants to play ball and get back out there. I appreciate working with y'all today."

It was an awful slaughter.

However, I did get a new tagline.

Yes, Plimpton was a good writer and it was a good look at the inside of the NFL of the time. They used to play it quite frequently when 12 cable channels seemed like too many. Plimpton’s book Shadow Box was a very good book with the same idea applied to boxing. His theme was always the amateur inside a professional sport. It was an interesting way to see into professional sports and the gap between real people and the professionals. https://www.bing.com/search?q=plimpton+boxing&form=ANNTH1&refig=dfa507f7d95441f0be900a88ad5c70de

Clicked on the link and was surprised to see it was Ventura College as the JUCO.

Now I know a little about VC, as I was a grad back in 1977. The family is still there, just 2 blocks from the campus.
I was the student athletic trainer back then, and we had a pretty good football team. My brother was a tight end on the team, '75-76, and went on to play at Nebraska.

Hehehe things have changed quite a bit since then , but it was a good trip down memory lane.

IIRC he got permission from a team to train like a QB and was permitted to play one down in a pre-season game.

Well, I only heard about the book, and you read it. So thanks for the gentle correction. I did see the Intellivision ads, though.

Hey PK. I’ve found that after I watch a few car videos, or gadget videos, that’s all that comes up.

If you are watching on your computer, I’m not sure how, but bottom line, if you reset your watch list, history, and the app itself, you’ll start over and get fresh stuff.

I watch YouTube on a Roku Stick, and here’s how I reset:
Go to the menu on the left and go down to settings. It’s several lines down, with a gear icon. Look at those selections. Again, go down several lines to “History and Data”.

Clear “Search History”, “Watch History”, and select “Reset App” Note - You have to go all the way into the screen on the right and select that box (you’ll see) to make these happen.

This should set you back to pretty neutral stuff. Kid stuff, goofy things. Then go search for what you want. Keep your viewing varied, and you should be OK.

The state with the greatest # of flags at the Alamo, each flag representing 1 fallen is Tennessee: Volunteers, right?

It'll be GREAT to see them playing the team from Austin!

I've wanted to see that for years! My brother went to Knoxville, and I've been to a few games.
