Alabama wants executions by nitrogen hypoxia: What is it?
Associated Press ^ | September 13, 2022 | Kim Chandler

Alabama told a federal judge that it could soon be ready to use a new, untried execution method called nitrogen hypoxia to carry out a death sentence.

The disclosure came Monday at a court hearing over inmate Alan Miller’s request to block his scheduled Sept. 22 execution by lethal injection. Miller maintains that prison staff lost paperwork he returned in 2018 requesting nitrogen hypoxia, an execution method that the state has authorized but never used. […]

Nitrogen hypoxia is a proposed execution method in which death would be caused by forcing the inmate to breathe only nitrogen, thereby depriving him or her of the oxygen needed to maintain bodily functions. […]

Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air inhaled by humans and is harmless when inhaled with oxygen. The theory behind the execution method is that changing the composition of the air to 100% nitrogen would cause the inmate to pass out and then die from lack of oxygen. …

Are you sure you don't mean methane? Nitrogen does not damage at all, as the article states: we breathe it all our lives. It's only the lack of oxygen that gives the dirt nap.

Even cheaper and a whole lot less messy is to inject them with a lethal dose of the fentanyl they are always seizing.

As a college student I took a big hit of 100% Nitrogen, things got awfully dark, very quickly. Years back some dentist’s son pinched an E cylinder of nitrous oxide and decided to crack it in a closet with friends. The result was four dead teens. The same could be said for the hypobaric chamber used to euthanize animals. There’s a loss of consciousness in seconds, but death may take twenty minutes.

It is VERY painless... In fact, there was a contractor who died because N2 was in his respirator line instead of compressed air or O2. He never noticed until he fell asleep and did not wake.

“I’m for the most painless death possible.”

Not me, I have a strong vindictive streak.
Most of those monsters caused their victims a lot of pain before they killed them. Let the punishment fit the crime I say.
Painless punishment is no punishment at all.

You’re sending them to meet their maker. Nothing you can do is going to be a more just punishment than what He does to them.
Any additional pain you cause is just delaying their final judgement, and is more about you than anyone else. If the death penalty isn’t a deterrent to others, a painful death penalty isn’t going to be either.

Exodus 21:24-25
24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

I’m an Old Testament type. I was raised that way and don’t see myself changing. Society was a lot better off when the death penalty was used and was painful.

I worked for the phone company for 30 years and retired. One of the main safety reminders we got was test a man hole before going in. We had a few that pulled the cover and jumped in and died very quickly. Some even jumped in trying to save their buddy and died also thinking they could hold their breath and get them out. It seems quick and efficient.

“why get fancy.”

Exactly. Alabama is wasting everyone’s time.

Stick with something that works.

Works fine. Big in the self-suicide groups.

Carbon Monoxide is even better.

The feeling that you’re suffocating is triggered by CO2 buildup. Helium is the suicide gas of choice but nitrogen does the same thing. It displaces the CO2 in the air so there isn’t any build-up.

If you’ve ever breathed from a helium balloon and it made you light-headed, continuing to breathe it would have made you pass out. Breathe it for long enough once you’ve passed out and you die.

I’ve never passed out but I’ve breathed it enough (so I could talk like a chipmunk) that I know it isn’t unpleasant.

Hmm; isn’t “self-suicide” a redundant phrase . . . ?

There’s also sulfur hexafluoride, which has the opposite effect on your voice, making it sound lower-pitched.

All this dancing around with the death penalty is just stupid pandering to the anti-execution crowd. Any anesthetist can put a guy painlessly to sleep in a moment or two, then give him a shot of cyanide. Done.

No, I mean nitrogen. It is, or was, used to pressurize telephone cables in manhole runs so that paper insulated cables remained dry. In its pure form it is lethal.

They weren’t need when proper safety measures were followed, such as proper ventilation of all manholes, and gas meters used to check for explosive gasses and to check for the level of oxygen in the spaces.
