The Monthly Fiber Arts Thread is a monthly gathering of people that love yarn and fabric of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first project, to experienced fiber artists and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
It is impossible to hijack the Monthly Fiber Arts Thread. Knitting, crochet, quilting, weaving, general crafting - there is no telling where it will go, and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our Fiber Arts Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a Month Ping List. We do post to the thread during the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Fiber Arts fans are welcomed any time!
“”I think I watch too many British Murder Mysteries!””
They are often mistaken for ‘entertainment ‘, they are in fact training videos.
Thanks for the ping, Face. :)
i think it would be great. With the holidays coming up, there are lots of different crafts that people will be doing for personal gifts.
I’ve been learning to transfer photos to canvas. Lots of ways to do it, and this seems easiest:

Faux stained glass with paints is interesting, too:

My friend, who is very active with her county fair & volunteers every year (also judges at the State Fair most years) has been put in charge of the Arts & Crafts tent/building for next year. The lady who has done it for years & years is retiring - this is her last year. The retiree is fairly rigid in her thinking - doesn’t want to change anything. My friend is soliciting/gathering ideas ... turns out there is a LOT people want to see and do in Arts & Crafts. Rather than just have “walk throughs”, she wants to have demonstrations of various things of interest (Extension Service, etc.) - more participation, which seems to be something people want to see.
I was supposed to be in the garden today - she called shortly after 2 & we talked until 6ish! Whew! :-) Maybe tomorrow on the garden work ....
I would be ok with that. I’ve been doing more non-fiber crafts lately also.
I thought you might like it because of your photography habit/hobby/sideline. You do take marvelous photos!
“Training videos.” Hmmm... I’ll have to let T-c know about that.
Very amusing!
My sister (who shall remain nameless because of her poor health) used to do spinning demonstrations at a county fair when her hubby was still with us, and they lived in Minnesota.
She had ordered a spinning wheel from New Zealand, and she spun some luscious wools. She even spun a skein of silk for me that I’ve never used but keep on display.
I think, after all I’ve said, that I really want to say, demonstrations of things at the county fair would stimulate your mind. Your friend should run with it!!
Adorable and clever tooth pillows!
Thanks! I passed your comment on to her - best wishes to your sister for improving health.
I think my friend could take some ideas from a Fall Fiber Festival Oct. 2 that we plan on attending. Description under the link.
It’s all great fun ... my biggest problem is I could spend hundreds of dollars on the beautiful yarns they have for sale - very frustrating ... but totally enjoyable to see it all and talk to the various vendors. It’s also outside, in a big field, so lots of room for sheep dogs, visitors, vendor tents, etc. I hope the weather is good - not looking so good at the moment, but one thing about the weather ... it can definitely change between now & then!

Thank you so much! I’ll pass on the word, but she hasn’t responded to me in almost a year, so I don’t know her state of health at the moment. Her last FR post was just about a year ago. I can only surmise that she is still with us, since I haven’t been notified otherwise!
My goodness that fiber festival looks like fun!!
I might be tempted if I knew someone in the area and was independently wealthy!
Unfortunately, I’m saving my pennies to go back “home” to the Rockies, so pleasure trips are out for now. Darnit.
One of the more “fun” things is watching the dogs work. They have a bunch of sheep that they let out in groups of 3-4 that the dogs have to herd through a series of obstacles & the finale is getting the sheep in a small pen at the top of the hill, near the spectators, and the handler has to shut the gate. The handler has their “whistles” to tell the dog what to do.
Well, in that bunch of sheep there’s always “one”, usually a big old ewe, who is giving the dog the ‘stink eye’ and does not want to cooperate. The other sheep follow her. The older, more experienced dogs know the virtue of patience ... the younger dogs, not so much.
We were watching a young dog class and the dog(s) get them through the obstacles fairly well (through a wide gate, around this or that) and then they get to the pen. The young dogs get SO frustrated ... one in particular just ‘broke’ and started nipping the old recalcitrant ewe in his bunch on the butt (big no no) and the ewe took off across the field (the rest following) with the dog in hot pursuit ... just out and out chasing/nipping ... no herding at all. His handler was whistling & whistling until almost blue in the face to no effect. The sheep and the dog were just ‘wild’. You don’t want to laugh out loud because it’s a disaster for the handler, but when you can see the dog getting more and more frustrated until they just can’t take it any more and they throw all training to the wind ... it is somewhat amusing. There is aother handler with two dogs who herds the sheep back to the main corral after a dog has finished its ‘test’. That handler went in the field with her dogs and helped get the situation back under control.
There are kiddie pools filled with water for the dogs because they get pretty hot, herding the sheep. We might get lucky with a very cool fall day, but the field is in open sun so it can get toasty when wearing a fur coat. The dogs all make a beeline for the pools when their ‘work’ is done & they leave the field and flop down in the cool water ... you can see the “aaahhhh!” LOL!
Something else that’s fun ... spinning yarn on a “drop spindle” ... I used to want to do this ... not so much now, but every time I see Cynthia, I get ‘the bug’. Her hand turned drop spindles made out of different woods are just gorgeous, too.

How to spin (very slow due to being an instructional, but Cynthia walks around spinning as she goes - really fast!):

BTW, the food trucks are awesome .... I don’t eat the food, but the smells are unbelievably delicious! :-)
One more thing ... the Angora rabbits ... there’s a lady who will spin straight off the rabbit! They have a few you can touch ... sooo soft. I’m trying to get my niece to raise a few, but she says only if I do the brushing ... I’m 3 hours away, so that won’t work!
Prayers up for your Sister.
One of the most fun dates Beau arranged for us back when we were courting (12 years already!) was a trip to a local fleece farm.
Demonstrations on everything from shearing the sheep to the final product.
So, I’m with you both on the hands-on demos. Love them!
LOL!
LOL!!
Thank you so much! I pray for her all the time, but I know that prayers work so I’m always grateful when others join me.

Adorable video at link with perfect musical selection to accompany it!
