I thought the problem with DeSantis was that he didn't rule his state with an iron fist, crushing all who desired freedom during the WuFlu. Instead Florida was among the most free states while leftist states said no one is allowed out of his house (unless it is the governor going to The French Laundry for a multi hundred dollar meal).

And remember, fascism is an offshoot of the Italian socialist party. Mussolini was the editor of their newspaper when he had a disagreement with the party about whether Italy should join the allies in WW 1 in an attempt to grab culturally Italian regions of the Austrian Empire. He did not disagree about their economic or their desire to control everything and everyone. Fascism is a child of the left. It is socialism plus foreign aggression.

You have to admit, democrats are a lot smarter than Republicans. Democrats get down and dirty, while Republicans are too prissy, too nice, to respond in kind, because they are terribly afraid of offending someone. Nervous nellies.
