Trump demands Republicans get rid of Mitch McConnell 'immediately' as their Senate leader, calls him a 'pawn for the Democrats' and mocks his 'lovely' wife Elaine Chao after he criticized his MAGA candidates

Donald Trump demanded that Republicans replace Mitch McConnell as their Senate leader in a brutal statement where he attacked the Kentucky senator and his wife, former Transportation secretary Elaine Chao.

The former president accused McConnell of being a 'pawn' for Democrats and said his inaction is causing moves in Congress 'our Country can never recover from'.

He also claimed that McConnell and Chao, who is Chinese, got 'rich' off of decades of business with China and said a new Republican Senate leader should be chosen.

Most predictions point to Republicans taking back a majority in Congress in the 2022 midterms, but Trump says McConnell shouldn't be the one to continue leading the party in the upper chamber.

'Mitch McConnell is not an Opposition Leader, he is a pawn for the Democrats to get whatever they want,' the former president wrote in a Wednesday statement. 'He is afraid of them, and will not do what has to be done.'

'A new Republican Leader in the Senate should be picked immediately!'

Last week, McConnell warned Republicans could risk not winning back a Senate majority due to 'candidate quality' among its nominees – a direct blow to Trump as endorsements have become his biggest source of power post-presidency.

Your history on McConnell just shows the current system for picking a senator. It says nothing about how he would fare under a non-17th Amendment Founding Fathers system.

Would the state legislature pick McConnell or a McConnell? Maybe? Maybe they would even do it twice! I guarantee every state official and state legislator sees himself/herself in the Senate. There would be plenty of competition. Anyway you wouldn’t get worse then McConnell!

I think Trump’s hatred of McConnell stems from Jan 6 - Trump thought that McConnell (and Pence) should have stopped the Senate from counting electoral college votes that were certified by the states. Neither McConnell nor Pence had the Constitutional authority to reject votes certified by the states.
I’m not big fan of McConnell (he’s an establishment relic), but I wish Trump get off the 2020 vendetta kick and aim his guns more at the Dems.
I don’t have specifics of what McConnell and his wife actually did with regard to China, but I’m sure it pales in comparison to the millions the Bidens received from China (selling influence).

“Repeal the 17th Amendment and these problems will fix themselves!”

That won’t fix the problem, in fact it will exacerbate the problem.

You’ll get even more Bush/McCain/Murkowski/Romney Republicans with state legislatures picking senators.

“Brilliant! Have the state legislators appoint one of their big cash donors in the good ol boy network to carry out their agenda.”

No...Stupid. The 17th was a dumb move for Republicans. It gave big cities (Dems) much more power than they had when legislators picked the Senators. Republicans would be the big winners if the 17th was repealed. If it weren’t for the 17th we would now have two Republican Senators from GA, PA, MI, AZ and NV. In other words, we would have a fillabuster proof Senate right now.

Exactly right. McConnell has got to be removed, first from his position as head of the R in the Senate, and then as Senator. Hey, Kentuckians, how about it? Keep Rand Paul, get rid of the turtle, ok?

FINALLY someone hits the nail on the head. Repealing the 17th would not be a "perfect" solution but it would vastly improve the situation. Having the majority, albeit maybe RINO's as part of the flock would at worst make the slope a little less slippery and steep.

I also agree with another post that mentioned the 60's SCOTUS ruling on how the States elected their Senators. If that changed so each county is equally represented in the State's senate, we would have an even stronger Republican majority in the States.

I think Trump’s hatred of McConnell stems from Jan 6 - Trump thought that McConnell (and Pence) should have stopped the Senate from counting electoral college votes that were certified by the states.

Certification by the states was not the end of it. Consider this:

Trump believes McConnell should have, with valid formal objections from the floor in hand, presided over a debate in the Senate that considered whether elections held in violation of the statutes and constitutions of various of the states should be deemed properly certified by such states. Such course of action is well-established by statute.

By Jan 6 there was ample evidence of record from experts as to the extent of state irregularities. There was also a number of days (Jan 6-11) for such examination and each state would have been invited to justify its certifications.

Pelosi in the house, of course, may have been able to influence the outcome of objections raised in her chamber.

While it is true as you write:
Neither McConnell nor Pence had the Constitutional authority to reject votes certified by the states. - the chambers most certainly had the right to do so in the Special Session that commenced on Jan6.

The fact they did not speaks for itself and to all of us.

Repealing the 17th A is both brilliant and common sense.
Sez you. Just saying it or dreaming it doesn't make it so. Repeal it and replace it with what? Show me the legal language.
It should be done by Art V convention.
First you'll have to get over that hurdle. How's that going? You won't live long enough to see it.

Your Art V convention would be totally dominated by the left and Soros. Are you a Soros leftist?

The 17th won't even make it trough the first round of an Art V convention.

Art V convention: Day one: Rewrite the first amendment.
Art V convention: Day 2: Rewrite the 2nd amendment to protect the children.
Art V convention: day 3: Closing ceremonies.

So the Progressives in 1913 got the 17th passed. Are you a progressive?
I'm a realist, not a pie in the sky dreamer.

The 17th will get repealed right before they repeal the 16th and replace the income tax with the Fairtax.< /sarcasm >

Repealing the 17th ( and the 16th ) amendment simply returns the US Constitution to its orignal form. IMO you being a progressive, you should find a different venue to discuss your leftist political views.

I think my post was self-explanatory that Miotch would have ascended to the Senate candidacy through either means, but let me school you further...

Kentucky state offices in 1984, Democrats held the entire rack, so no GOP candidates lurking there.

In fact, there were only 10 Republicans out of 38 seats in the Kentucky State Senate, and 3 of those were crossovers from the Democrats!

Not only that, but future scumbag goobernor Steve Beshear and noodnik know-nothing outright crook sob father of the current goobernor, was then serving illegally as both Lt. Governor and Senate Majority Leader. The extremely weak GOP Senate Minority Leader was a milquetoast named Rogers who had zero state-wide base to set up a Senate run.

The only possible competition Miotch had in 1984 was former GOP Gov. Louie Nunn, but Nunn had already lost to the incumbent Huddleston for the Senate seat, AND then lost badly to playboy John Y. Brown Jr. for the '79 goobernorship. Nunn was damaged goods after that election, and was a mere board-sitter/university regent by 1984, also with no state-wide base.

The mid-80s national GOP regarded Miotch as a savior, even though he was truly a carpetbagger with DC connections and influence (he had already befriended Supremo Scalia by this time!).

They poured a ton of money into his campaign and skewered Huddleston's awful voting attendance record with the now-famous Bloodhounds ad. Miotch would have never had, and has never had, a serious challenger through either system EVER.

Don’t agree that its self-explanatory!

Since the Founding Fathers pre-17th amendment hasn’t existed since 1913. It’s impossible to say what McConnell ‘s career would look like or even if he’d even be in politics.

I’m not smarter then the Founding Fathers. The FF system made the senator much more beholden to his state then the current system. If the state voters allow corrupt political practices in their state, that’s on them. (and that’s what you described!) The only change I might make in their system is maybe allow the voters to petition the legislature for a review and recall.
