As summer comes to an end, two expensive fantasy series filled with sorcery, sword fights and fantastical beasts will premiere on rival streaming services.
While it may seem like Amazon Prime Video’s “The Rings of Power” and Warner Bros. Discovery’s “House of the Dragon” should be dueling franchises, as they begin within a couple weeks of each other, the two series serve very different purposes for their respective studios.
The stakes may be higher for “House of the Dragon,” which will go first. It starts Sunday on HBO and streaming service HBO Max, arriving as newly minted CEO David Zaslav is looking for fat to trim.
Cost-cutting measures have become status quo at the recently merged company including layoffs and content eliminations from HBO Max. As Warner Bros. Discovery seeks to save money, it’s also looking to consolidate its streaming services, something that will be expensive and time-consuming.
“House of the Dragon” tells the story of the Targaryen civil war that took place about 200 years before the events portrayed in “Game of Thrones.” It is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel “Fire and Blood.” Unlike Martin’s other books in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series, this one features an omniscient narrator who documents the histories based on collected accounts of events. In some cases, these stories contradict each other and there are multiple versions of events.

They are both woke crap. The leftist Machine is scrambling to save them after the promos got slammed big time.
:)
No, but elves are a creature of European folklore.
If do a film rooted in Greco-Roman, Nordic, Aztec, Hindu, or Japanese myths, you should cast actors who ethnically reflect that culture.
Is “cultural appropriation” not a bad thing anymore, or just in this situation? Elves, dwarves, trolls, goblins, etc. are unique characters from Celtic Mythology and folk lore. So African elves make no sense.
CEASE THIS FAGGOTRY AT ONCE!
To me it came across as deliberately rushed!
To me it all came across ‘We’re done! Let’s go cash our checks and get some other gig!’. The actors seemed to be walking it in.
I feel better now. /rant off
I get it. But it was just before the coronavirus pandemic and with all this wokeness that is going on right now, it was time to end it there. If it's still on now, it'll be crap and nothing like what we are used to seeing the first couple of seasons.
I’m not sure he’ll even live long enough to finish the books. His legacy looks like its shaping up like a hot mess of disappointment.
I have a feeling that many fans are being alienated and that both Amazon and HBO will take a bath on both productions. Will they learn their lesson yet? Probably not. But it's part of the process. Eventually Hollywood will learn that in order to survive, they'll have to return to making entertainment. But the 2020s decade is going to be terrible.
I should add /rhetorical rant off
Actually I would watch that. Let the Wayans brother write the script. Lol…
"Will purchase it and no other." I have a dog-eared set of the old Ballantine paperbacks too. Nice shout-out.
LOL. Or Dave Chapelle.
If Amazon screws up LOTR by going woke or trying to ramp up sexuality by copying Game of Thrones, I’ll cancel my Prime membership just like I canceled Netflix. I also won’t feel at all guilty if I selectively watch bootleg copies of their movies and series. Casualties of the culture wars.
With the original Tolkien painting cover art? So did I once. Awesome. Don’t lose those!
