As summer comes to an end, two expensive fantasy series filled with sorcery, sword fights and fantastical beasts will premiere on rival streaming services.
While it may seem like Amazon Prime Video’s “The Rings of Power” and Warner Bros. Discovery’s “House of the Dragon” should be dueling franchises, as they begin within a couple weeks of each other, the two series serve very different purposes for their respective studios.
The stakes may be higher for “House of the Dragon,” which will go first. It starts Sunday on HBO and streaming service HBO Max, arriving as newly minted CEO David Zaslav is looking for fat to trim.
Cost-cutting measures have become status quo at the recently merged company including layoffs and content eliminations from HBO Max. As Warner Bros. Discovery seeks to save money, it’s also looking to consolidate its streaming services, something that will be expensive and time-consuming.
“House of the Dragon” tells the story of the Targaryen civil war that took place about 200 years before the events portrayed in “Game of Thrones.” It is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel “Fire and Blood.” Unlike Martin’s other books in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series, this one features an omniscient narrator who documents the histories based on collected accounts of events. In some cases, these stories contradict each other and there are multiple versions of events.

“Rings” has turned out to be a woke mess and would not be surprised if the other isn’t also.
Hard pass.
I think the Rungs of Power, not based on Tolkien, will be a hot mess.
With lots if “Elves of Color”.
It will surely pander to America’s false idol of diversity
Woke mess Rings of Power is looking like.
It goes without saying since the other one is a prequel to a porn series it is probably woke by default.
Been reading nothing but bad news about the Rings. You’re right it’s not only be infect d by wokeisn also bastardized by compressing time and characters that never meet and characters made of whole cloth.
I won’t watch a single episode and I hope it crash and burns like Batgirl.
The Rings of Power will probably have woke themes and woke characters and that will destroy it.
Anyone with respect for authors living or dead should not touch “Rings of Power” with a 10 foot battle lance.
I have zero interest in watching a Rivendell pride parade.
That made me LOL!
As with game shows, reality shows, superhero shows and movies, the genres get saturated and viewers eventually tire of them.
Make one blockbuster and a dozen similar will appear magically in a short time.
I tried to watch Amazon Prime’s Wheel of Time. I stayed through 4.5 episodes. It didn’t go anywhere. It seemed scattered.
I did watch Game of Thrones. The final season was bust that didn’t live up to the quality of the previous seasons.
The final two volumes in the book series (authored by George RR Martin) haven't even been released yet and so the ending in the book series ("A Song Of Ice And Fire") is likely to be much different.
Apparently Martin gave HBO some bullet points on how he felt the series would end but as he is still writing the books, it is very likely that the ending will be much different than what was seen on TV.
Everybody like it. :)
In the Witcher series, there are black elves. And they’re the dumbest ones..
So much stuff to avoid watching.
Because it is a historical and scientific fact that all Elves were White. Do I have that right?
I realize I'm in the minority but I thought they did a good job with the final season. It was time for the show to end. American shows are known to drag on forever. GOT did not make this mistake. Another thing to consider, they ended the show just before the woke virus infected Hollywood
At this point, never. So it will be written by a different author who will finally finish the volumes.
