Do not restrict your view to modern history, as the Chinese certainly do not. They see Vietnam as a part of China as it has been more than once in the past, and most expect it will be a part of China again. Chinese border incursions in modern history while a developing nation are nothing compared to the might it is now amassing at the border.
China will invade Taiwan only if Biden is POTUS. With Biden in charge, the whole world becomes an endangered species.
Yes
Now? No.
Sometime in future while Brandon is still pretending to be POTUS? Yes.
yes
The Chinese were tossed out of Vietnam in 938 and except for one period between 1407-1428, have never been successful in conquering it again. For most of the past thousand years, it hasn’t been part of China.
What, exactly, are you counting as ‘modern’ history?
Interesting all the nos. I would have said yes.
China thinks it’s a grownup now.
I was close enough to observe a family member that once a
year always though they had arrived at manhood. (grownup)
Starting at around seven, this person each year would test
the waters to see what they could get away with.
That’s how I see China these days.
China has been around for thousands of years. The current
situation sees them growing up in a way. In the 1990s
they started a process of growing toward being a world
power.
Each step of the way, it wanted to be seen as an adult,
but like its dealings with Taiwan, it just doesn’t act
like an adult.
Nobody is interested in attacking China, but it has this
complex here it thinks it needs to project outward in the
region and globally.
It’s not ready. It’s not grown up enough, and sooner or
later someone is going to have to slap the ever-lovin
crap out of it, to bring it back to reality.
Modern history is while China was weakened by western colonialism and both China and Vietnam heavily under the yoke of western power.
And in modern times (as opposed to history) China is cycling back to a point where it won't be long where it can take Vietnam. Your references to failed invasion attempts while China was still one of the poorest developing nations only underscore the point about China's ultimate ambitions, which will manifest more seriously now that China is becoming a superpower.
Yes but.
The but is “eventually” and from one day, one month, one year to the next we do not know when “eventually” will become “today”.
