Nichelle Nichols, an actress whose role as the communications chief Uhura in the original “Star Trek” franchise in the 1960s helped break ground on TV by showing a Black woman in a position of authority and who shared with co-star William Shatner one of the first interracial kisses on American prime-time television, died July 30 at 89.

Her role was a big deal and she handles it all with grace. She also exited public life a few years ago - gracefully. Too bad some others who are obviously in similar cognitive decline didn't follow her example.

Actually there was a LOT of ground. It ain’t bigoted to acknowledge reality. And reality at the time was putting either women or blacks in positions of authority on TV was a big no. Gene fought the network hard on that. More than once.

There were a lot of hot babes on Star Trek in those short skirts - but Lt, Uhuru in my eyes was the hottest . I can still see her sitting her chair , legs crossed ...those legs and thighs ...wow !
