I bought some Dragon’s Tongue beans. Green with purples streaks. When we hit 96-98 degrees in May when 70-80 is normal, I gave up on starting anything else.

Cats are very efficient killers. We have a stray that is hanging around and it will keep everything but deer away. Deer are the worst problem here but they avoid areas that smell bad and marijuana gives off a strong odor. They have left things around it alone.

Then it’s just psychological on their part, but they both avoid it. I avoid it for the high carb content. Orange juice is nothing but sugar. Ugh!

If you have a Dollar Tree/General nearby, they sell jars of Roasted Red Peppers for $1.25. Sometimes they’re hidden on a bottom shelf near the pasta and spaghetti sauce, but I always look for them, when I’m there. ;)

I’ve had a coon trying to break into the house for the last two nights. We have a small camper as a foyer/mudroom. Heard some noise night before last, headed out and saw a butt hanging down from the slightly open RV roof vent. He had pushed the screen out, was almost in and saw me and turned around. Half asleep, I though it was the cat and almost reached up to give it a push on the butt. Then I noticed the butt was a little wide and more brown than black. Glad I didn’t touch it. Probably would have reeled around and tore my hand up. Then last night at midnight, it was trying to rip the now closed lid off of the vent. Chased it off the roof but it came back an hour later and tried again. He climbs/slides off the rounded end of the camper and scurries away under the truck. I’m ready for him tomorrow night. Going to move the truck over to give me more open space or park it somewhere else.

I can’t imagine growing in Maine.

My front yard is very large. My son is scheming up a greenhouse with one of his friends who is a builder. We have a fairly short growing season. The key to growing is night temps and our temps run a little cold for early growing. Last frost is May 15.

We have a canning kitchen but we gave away all the canning supplies. It’s something I would like to do.

He’s nomadic. A snowbird farmer. Spends part of the year in Florida at his mom’s house and the other part in Maine. He used to be in horticulture/landscaping so his mom’s hard, even though mostly edibles, looks nice. So depending on your zoning or any HOA rules, you could grow quite a bit in a small yard.

Thank you for the kind words!

Jealous of your beans! I’m quite behind this season; I’ll be canning well into October this year.

Since I’m a glutton for punishment, it’s almost time for me to put in beets, lettuces, spinach and radishes for a fall crop. Spring crops hated our ‘straight to HOT’ Spring. :(

Thanks - we have a “Dollar” store nearby where I get most of my cards, gift bags, etc. so I’ll take a look.

“The Little Man” is coming to visit this morning to show off his walking skills (14 mo great-nephew). Fun times ahead! :-)

I add some cream to my homemade tomato soup just before serving. Makes it less acidic.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll take a look we have both stores in our little town. Love roasted red peppers. Sometime try a slice of pan toasted crusty bread, some fresh mozzarella, some thin slices of good leftover steak, and some roasted red peppers with the oil. Heavenly! Open face snack.

Beer in a pie pan worked for slugs in Phoenix. Being Phoenix, not much stale beer there, either lol.

That little guy looks like he’s plotting revenge on somebody who trapped one of his cousins or something.

Great idea! I always use milk with the condensed, canned version. Not sure why that didn’t occur to me for the homemade version as well. ;)
