So redlining - not issuing mortgages in black dominated neighborhoods - has become a code word for racism. Prescribing psychotropic drugs is what passes for mental health care these days.

I watched an interesting documentary on the mortgage bust of 2008. Redlining disappeared when mortgages became a security. Wall St realized that there was big money to made by grouping mortgages into a CDO security. After all mortgages almost never failed. Mortgage brokers were more than happy to issue trillions in risky loans and the sell them off to Wall St. Housing speculation sky rocketed. As soon as the recession hit, mortgage failures became rampant which crashed the financial sector. The movie “The Big Short” is especially good on the topic, however it leaves out the government’s role in the financial disaster.
