‘Popeye’ Comic Strip Getting Woke Makeover with ‘More Characters Who Aren’t Heterosexual’

After nearly a hundred years in existence, the Popeye comic strip is reportedly getting a woke makeover, with the strip’s latest cartoonist promising more ethnic diversity and “more characters who aren’t heterosexual.”

Cartoonist Randal K. Milholland described the Popeye character as being “gender fluid,” citing old episodes in which the plot required Popeye to dress in drag.

“I [want] to bring in more characters who aren’t heterosexual,” Milholland said in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News. “I don’t live in that purely straight white world, and I don’t think a lot of other people do either.”

There’s actually an old “Far Side” cartoon in which Olive Oyl reacts with shock seeing Popeye dressed in a house dress. Popeye simply replies: “I yam what I yam!”

In 1988, I bought a comic book at my college’s bookstore called “Mondo Popeye.” It was funny as hell, putting Popeye, Olive Oyl and Bluto in these modern-world situations. As for the Sea Hag, she was running a predatory corporation.

OK, according to Amazon, it is from 1989, and you can collect a good copy of it if you somehow have $310 after spending so much on food and gas.

The Popeye character was first seen in 1929 in the Thimble Theatre comic strip.

That means that the copyrights expire and enter the public domain in 2024. So, it is apparently time to destroy them.
