The 25 Best Films of 2022 (so far)
The AV Club ^ | June 30, 2022 | The AV Club (staff)

Posted on 07/05/2022 8:26:50 PM PDT by sphinx

Despite the fact that both the pandemic and uncertainty around moviegoing continue, 2022 has already been a solid year for cinema. At the midway point, one obvious trend from our best-of list is the absence of big-budget tentpoles: The Batman and Downtown Abbey: A New Era weren’t quite well-received enough to warrant inclusion, and the less said about Jurassic World: Dominion, the better. Top Gun: Maverick, however, is more than just a commercial success story, so don’t give up on studio pictures just yet.

What instead dominates this list are indie distributors—thoughtful, modest fare with ambitious emotional reach. As far as scorecards go, it’s hard to beat A24: All five of the studio’s features released in 2022 are among The A.V. Club’s favorites. Read on for our chronological round-up of the best-reviewed films of the year so far.

Yes it is!!!

But the pacing is so slow I fall asleep during it and have to rewind to pick up the story line again.

The most recent film I’ve watched is the DVD I bought of “Old Henry”. Tim Blake Nelson is outstanding and the supporting cast is pretty dang good too. The scenes and sets are really authentic looking in that they don’t look anything like California.

A lot of us like movies. But many of us also have a problem in finding good new movies. As a group, we're older and much more conservative than the general public. We're a niche market. And most of us don't seem to get out to theaters, so we've become dependent on the streamers and their algorithms. The advertising isn't directed at us. The question becomes how we even find out about the good films that ARE made. There aren't enough of our kind of movies, so we should at least support the ones that do get produced.

Movie threads have been a staple at FR since I've been around (since 2000), but we spend 95 percent of our time doing our @#&^!& Hollywood kabuki dance (which is often justified) and relatively little time acknowledging the good stuff. We complain endlessly that the film industry is a lost cause, while failing to support the good films when they do appear. That's on us. Given that we're outliers, we will tend not to find them unless we look for them. As a minority counterculture, we need to improve our situational awareness.

No one on this thread has yet discussed foreign films, which have a considerable following on FR. I'll just note that a couple of foreign films -- RRR, from India, and Hit the Road, from Iran (?!?!?!) -- are showing up on the vast majority of the current "best of" lists. I'm experimental enough to take a chance on them sometime soon. If anyone has seen them, how about a preview?

Funny clip. Did you ever see the movie? Is it worth a watch?

Yes, a lot of America seems to have gone crazy. But not all of it. I didn't know where to put this either, but I've been touting After Yang as the best film of the year (so far), and the question of diversity does come up. Here is some of the "diversity" in After Yang:

LA Galaxy performance

MLS Cup performance

Malea Emma was nine when After Yang was filmed. These clips are the breakout performances at age SEVEN that went viral and put her on the map. There are still some real Americans to be found, even in California, and even in the movies.

Some of the intersectional lefties criticize her presence in the movie because they hate international and transracial adoptions, and because they think Malea Emma is inauthentically Chinese and therefore should not play a Chinese adoptee. (Her family is ethnically Chinese but lived in Indonesia before coming to the U.S.) But that's a story for another day.

Just another Hollywood actress. Don't nuke 'em all. Just nuke the wokesters.

Old Henry was excellent. Best western I’ve seen in many years and definitely one of my top five last year.

"The Batman movie sucked big time- it was horrible- sorry i wasted time watching it"

I finally watched it and I just don't get why Batman was re-booted again with such an awful movie. The best was "Batman Begins" with Christian Bale, IMO.

"That new Jeff bridges mini series old man is excellent"

It's the wife and my new favorites series. The first episode started off slow, but the intrigue has built with every episode. Plus, Bridges steals every scene he is in. He's a favorite actor of ours and an Executive Producer, so we figured he wouldn't sign on unless done well.

"The Terminal List on Amazon prime and it’s very good so far."

We intend to check it out. Could be good. Some of these streaming studios are making interesting series, they also make crap.

The Terminal list gets better with each episode. You definitely want to check it out.

Thanks for info. I don’t care enough to research American films, but the movies from Indi a and Iran sound quite interesting. Where can you see them?
