Measuring DNA alleles, we are somewhere in the 99% range the same as Neanderthals, with evidence of interbreeding, which is why some scientists consider us the same species.
Scientifically, we are homo sapiens sapiens, they were homo sapiens Neanderthals, according to the most recent thinking.
