GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - As the 100 deadly days of summer moves forward, we wanted to take a look at how one recently passed state law is affecting drivers.
The ‘move right’ law, or as many call it the ‘slowpoke’ law.
“If you are traveling on a controlled access highway, you should stay out of the left hand lane unless you are passing or overtaking a car,” said Corporal Joe Hovis, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

He's the one who, as soon as you and he have passed the right lane driver, dart in to pass you on the right. Sometimes on a straight stretch you can spot them coming a mile away in your rearview, weaving in and out of the traffic.
LOL! Ain’t it the truth.
Then the guy you're passing says to himself "You ain't passin' ME!" and speeds up to prevent it.
So... you're going to force the driver behind you in the left (passing) lane to slow down because you're not willing to drive at the speed limit in the right (slow) lane while someone is entering the roadway. So everybody has to slow down for entering cars because you say so.
It's not your call to force others to slow down because you are driving too fast (such as 75 mph) in the right lane for other drivers to enter the roadway safely. Drive correctly; slow down to the posted speed limit so that vehicles can enter the right lane safely. Entering cars are required to yield and merge safely and they're given an entire merge lane to accommodate them. You're determined to give them an additional right lane while you hog the left lane.
Other have posted here that places that figured it out, such as Germany, Portugal, and parts of the United States, would correctly cite you for failing to yield.
Every time I hit the Keys, you almost would read about me in the news!! It happens all over but it seems like the run down to Key West there are a surplus of those who do 55 when you cant pass, but as soon as a passing lane comes up, theyll speed up to 85 and 90 so no one can pass them!! and then slow right back down to 55.... man i’d love to plant my foot in their a$$!!
Haha.
Where in Florida are you?
I’m a Michigander!! But being an avid Kiteboarder I head down there at least twice a year. When I bring my boat I stay at Lower sugarloaf lodge and hit the sandbars around Marvin key. Great fishing there as well!! But mostly I hang around St Pete...
BS. I drive at or slightly over the limit in the travel lane, depending on traffic. I move over because entering drivers fail to yield about half of the time causing problems. If I see at a distance that there’s room for them to merge ahead of me I give them a headlight blink and stay put. I speed UP to 75 after the lane change to get a safe merge. If 75 is too slow for you, tough. I’ll move over as soon as possible and SAFE.
Limits here are generally 55/65.
There was a small town in Florida that lost its Charter for their heavy handed traffic enforcement.

Been on the mower, only bad driving is my own. d;^)
So... entering drivers cause problems for you and you in turn cause problems for drivers in the left lane. It's like sharing except it's not.
There are left lane rules and right lane rules. Someone breaking rules for the right lane is not your cue to break rules for the left lane.
Which lane should I drive in when there are 15 lanes of traffic?

Oh! So you know the guy!
Have a great weekend. Be safe.
I lived in Columbia for 7 1/2 years and while I love South Carolina dearly, I have to agree with you that the drivers are...kinda bad. They’re a different kind of bad though. They’re not homicidal like Washington or Atlanta drivers. They’re just clueless. They did brain-dead stuff constantly. The worst ones were the black girls with black sorority license plate frames. I swear they’d either do 50 in the left lane or 90 in the right lane on my daily commute into downtown Columbia from the northeast on SC 277.
Speed limits were really optional there too. Which is odd, considering that in the rest of SC, the Highway Patrol is vigilant and pretty aggressive about speeders.

We have that law in KS, MO, and NE. It says for stopped emergency vehicles move over or slow down, nothing about broken down clunkers. Yet people move to the left for obviously abandoned vehicles even if the traffic is heavy enough to make it dangerous.
That is in issue in my town (along a few highways connected to Port Newark/Elizabeth); lots of truck damage.
What impressed me in NY was that as you approach an entrance ramp everyone (like a well-oiled machine) gets out of the right lane so people coming on don’t have to race to get into traffic - and as the entrance ramp fades behind they spread out again - brilliant!
In those areas you wouldn’t get ticketed for “cruising in the passing lane”; otherwise it is a ticketable offense (rarely enforced) here in NJ - often doled out to idiots who refuse to make way for emergency vehicles trying to pass them in the right lane.
I actually witnessed a gal trying to text on the freeway doing 70 MPH.
“Darwinism is people driving 20-30 miles over the limit. Its a passing lane. Not the Autobahn”
Definitely; I’ve found that if I want to drive fast and there is barely any traffic, it is easier to do it in the middle lane - cops watch that fast lane like hawks.
Generally you may speed here if everyone is doing it; it actually creates a dangerous situation if everyone is driving 70 and someone wants to drive 55 in the right or center lane. We don’t have them in NJ, but I’ve seen signs in NY with MINIMUM speed limits (usually 40, which still isn’t safe on a fast roadway).
WE call them the “hall monitors” - and they do create a dangerous situation. If someone is passing you on the right while you’re in the left lane, then you’re moving too slowly and creating a hazard.
