Diesel fuels the country, both rail and trucks.

Warnings are being sent that diesel not only will go sky high, but will become scarce.

We had better prepare.

And commercial fishing boats. Something we are acutely aware of in Southeast Alaska.

Compression engines (diesel) will run on a large variety of C10-C20 chain hydrocarbons. The newer engines have emission management systems that severely hinder the use of anything but ultrapure low sulfur diesel fuels because of these systems and the now ubiquitous Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF, facilitates the catalyst in exhaust systems).

Older diesels should run fairly well on biodiesels and pretty much any combustible oil in the C10-C20 range. I’d personally experiment if I had one, but ones engine whispering savvy and risk limits should counsel ones use of alternatives.

That said, in a pinch, you could probably get somewhere, or run a generator, on a home brew mix of very well filtered used motor oil and alter the viscosity thinner if needed with small fractions of kerosene, lighter oil or fuel additives.

Union Pacific ordered a company which ships an additive necessary for diesel trucks to satisfy EPA emission requirements (it’s not added to the diesel, but the exhaust),
to cut the number of tank cars shipping their additive BY HALF.

A couple of companies (I can’t recall which) have announced they will be cutting back their shipments of some foodstuffs to California and Washington, since the costs are getting too high.

One almost suspects they are doing this on purpose.
