An intense road rage dispute between two motorists in Florida landed one of them behind bars Tuesday after he pulled out a knife, prompting the victim to display a gun, authorities said.
Rafael Vincent Rivera, 50, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill in connection with the confrontation in Palm Coast, about 80 miles north of Orlando, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said.
"Tragic disagreements should never result in violence in our streets," Sheriff Rick Staly said in a statement.
Rivera was driving a Silver Toyota Tacoma when the victim cut in front of him with a motorcycle near an intersection at Pine Lakes Parkway and Whirlaway Drive around 1 p.m., he told authorities. When they both came to a stop, Rivera allegedly exited his vehicle holding a knife.
The motorcyclist became concerned and grabbed his metallic knuckles, authorities said. After they exchanged words during a tense confrontation that was captured on cellphone video by the victim's wife, Rivera began "slashing" his knife toward the victim, the sheriff's office said.
The motorcyclist, who is licensed to carry a concealed weapon, pulled out a handgun and told Rivera to back away, which he did, according to the footage.
Both men were detained when authorities arrived. After interviewing witnesses and watching video footage of the incident, Rivera was arrested.

Are brass knuckles legal in Florida? Cool!
Stupid Florida man.....
Here in kentucky, a guy pulled a bat out of his trunk and started pummeling the windshield of the other guys car. The other guy pulled out a gun and, from his driver seat, shot the guy dead.
They brought charges against the driver because he instigated the whole road rage incident. He was found not guilty.
Moral of the story: Never bring a bat to a gunfight and, critically, don’t pull out the bat in the first place.
An armed society is a polite society. If you think the other guy may have a gun, and the legal right to use it if you physically threaten him, you may not pull out the bat...
A knife wielding double tap candidate.
The way the aggressor with the knife suddenly tried to act like a victim. This is when video is saves the day.
And the victim’s wife just kept recording the confrontation. My wife would have had her pistol drawn, not her cell phone.
Obama brings a gun to a knife fight
By BEN SMITH 06/14/2008 02:48 PM EDT
The McCain campaign and RNC are pouncing on another line from the Obama pool report:
“If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,” Obama said in Philadelphia last night. “Because from what I understand, folks in Philly like a good brawl. I’ve seen Eagles fans.”
McCain and the RNC took on the comment in terms that will be very familiar to people who followed Clinton campaign statements last year:
“Barack Obama’s call for ‘new politics’ is officially over. In just 24 hours, Barack Obama attacked one of America’s pioneering women CEOs, rejected a series of joint bipartisan town halls, and said that if there’s a political knife fight, he’d bring a gun,” McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said, referring also to the Obama campaign’s shot at Carly Fiorina’s lavish pay package and role in layoffs at Hewlett-Packard.
“Why is Barack Obama so negative? In the last 24 hours, he’s completely abandoned his campaign’s call for ‘new politics,’ equating the election to a ‘brawl’ and promising to ‘bring a gun,’ “ said the RNC’s Alex Conant.
Obama doesn’t actually use the phrase “new politics” a lot, and this is a box that the Clinton campaign tried, and failed, to keep him in last year, when it emerged early that he was happy to throw punches, and even to start fistfights, sending, for instance, the first negative mail to hit in Iowa last fall.
Obama never paid much of a price for his willingness to go negative. He also, to be fair, never promised that he wouldn’t attack, and indeed often promised to be tougher than past Democrats, and bragged of his Chicago training. He disavowed nasty character attacks, but then everybody disavows nasty character attacks.
What’s left of course, is to speculate on what form of political change Obama promises: It’s not some sort of disarmament; it’s not any large deviation from traditional Democratic policy; it’s more a vaguer — and harder to control, and deliver — promise to lead the country past the deep cultural divisions around race, religion and even Vietnam that have dominated national politics for decades.
And the victim’s wife just kept recording the confrontation. My wife would have had her pistol drawn, not her cell phone.
In this instance, it's probably good she filmed the encounter. It probably kept her husband out of jail.
You are a truly blessed man.
The motorcyclist became concerned and grabbed his metallic knuckles,
I don’t get road rage.
Most people speed and peel in and out of traffic for a few feet only to be stopped at the next red light.
I saw a guy get beep his horn at an intersection at a motorist in front of him.
The motorist in front could not turn due to heavy traffic. Dude in the back kept laying on his horn.
Finally the motorist in the front gave the guy the bird behind him.
Dude in the back gets out of his car and as soon as he gets to the window, dude in front pulls a guy and sticks it in the guys face. I LOL’d as the dude fell to the ground who was outside trying to escalate the situation.
It helps to have dashcams these days. All of my cars have them. Folks are wild.
Biker dude was as dumbass as the knife wielding dumbass.
Civilian instructors will use this video as a demonstration of what NOT to do (of course, depending on your state’s laws and the ideology of your local DA).
Whoops... poorly worded first line.
I saw a get beep his horn...
*gun* not “guy”
Just not my day at the keyboard. Sheesh...
I used to love watching those “crash videos” on Youtube. But lately, I think they should be called, “Karens with dash cams.” I’m sick of all the “That guy cut me off!” videos. Heck, half the “bad drivers” I see on those videos could have been me. And it was pretty clear people were just getting really frustrated with the person with the camera blocking traffic in one way or another.
Biker was smart not to off him though. Let the law deal with him.
Here’s your crowbar
And your centre bit
Your life preserver
You may want to hit.
Your silent matches
Your dark lantern seize
Take your file
And your skeletonic keys
Damn! My lying eyes are at it again...
“became concerned” was a nice touch.
