Two people were arrested after a Mercedes-Benz believed to have been involved in burglaries was found in Irvine with a license plate flipping device, police said Wednesday.
Police first got a call about the car from a resident who recognized the “suspicious” vehicle as possibly being involved in several vehicle burglaries that happened the week before, Irvine Police Department officials said.
Officers found and stopped the vehicle in the area of Harvard Avenue and Main Street.
They discovered the car had a device that can flip the vehicle’s license plate with the push of a button.
It also had an elaborate gas siphoning device that transferred fuel directly into the vehicle’s gas tank, according to the department.
Inside the car, officers found burglary tools, evidence of ID theft, and stolen property like cash and wallets, officials said.
Officers also found remotes and key fobs that they believe were allowing the suspects to get into residential buildings.

a smart crook? nearly unheard of honestly.
I predicted the fuel theft a mo ago
I’m jealous...
Nice, but get back to me when it has an ejection seat and machine guns behind the headlights.
These can be had on e-bay for under $200 (but they say they dont ship to US)
With a Mercedes too.
I’ll bet they’re Vietnamese immigrants . . . this is too sophisticated for our lazy, unimaginative homegrown criminals. Orange County has a huge Southeast Asian population.
Good thing a local resident noticed this suspicious car that kept popping up when burglaries happened.
The pair caught look like a new version of Boris and Natasha.
That’s hardly out of a 007 movie. Those have been around forever.
they’re flipped off...
Here in Raleigh you see a lot of plates with tinted plastic covers over them. Some are so dark you can’t make out anything on the plate, even at close range. That is right up there with the dump trucks that don’t have plates at all. I don’t understand how they get away with it.
They get pulled over for rear license plate covers where I live all the time, even for clear ones.
You'd see them on cars at shows for decades, especially those that were heavily customized or lowered.
Every so often you'll read about the police catching someone using a plate flipper, especially ghetto trucking companies, to evade tolling by camera.
You can buy plate flippers on amazon....
“They get pulled over for rear license plate covers where I live all the time, even for clear ones.”
That’s the way it should be, otherwise why bother with them?
It’s the toll road.mafia that pushes for no plate covers with polarized ones you can go right through the camera’s in the traps and they only see grey. So it’s all about profits for the toll barrons. Texas cops have a hissy fit if they see plate covers good little attack dogs for the toll corporations they are.
