IRS denial of 1400.00 'credit' on taxes from 'stimulus' not taken [vanity]
FR ^ | 5/17/2022 | self

When I filed my taxes (TurboTax), there was a page which - as with last year - asked a question as to whether I got my 'stimulus' check. I do not recall that there was any other option (yes or no).

I did not get a stimulus during the virus.

Last year it automatically credited my taxes. No notice from IRS.

This year it did the same (automatically credited my taxes on my answer to the question).

Recently I got a notice of tax due, reversing the credit.

Now I owe >$1400.00, plus interest & penalties.

Go to the mat, and get your US House representative involved if you have a case.

The IRS banks on the victim not fighting them.

I'm a very patient man. I'll sit on the phone for 45 minutes waiting for them to pick up.

If they DON'T finally answer you on the phone, then you have an even better case for your Congresscritter.

In my situation which is probably "not normal"... I have two checking accounts. While doing the tax software I checked the box that I did not receive the $1400 stimulus. It wasn't a week later after sending my taxes in that the IRS mailed me a notification statement of the $1400 stimulus payment. (the statement was notifying me that they sent me $1400 a year earlier!). Sure enough I checked my secondary bank statement from a year ago and there it was. The IRS caught my "mistake" on my taxes and sent me a correction to my 1040 and I had to basically pay it back. All of this occurred before April 15th.

I would be very worried if you receive a physical check. The way the postal system is working I could see checks being stolen out of the mail system. But, if you did receive a stimulus the IRS should have sent a statement in February of this year that they sent you one. I cannot see a thief stealing a check and the IRS notification statement that you were sent the stimulus... unless, thinking more sinister a roomie has access to your mail.

The IRS is very efficient. They cashed my payment check as soon as they got it.

I moved between my 2018 tax filing and the stimulus checks going out, so the first check went to my old address and I never received it. On my 2020 tax form, it asked if I had “missed” a check - yes - and did I want to apply that to my taxes due - yes. A couple months later, in July 2021, I actually got a letter from the IRS saying that my first check had “expired” and I should call them with a updated address and they’d send a new check. Well, I figured that they just hadn’t processed applying that amount to my tax debt, but assumed they would figure that out.

I tried calling...that is a joke. IF you can reach a human, they can’t do a damn thing to solve a problem.

So they keep sending me letters telling me I owe $1200, and I keep sending them photocopies of the letter they sent, which specifically says that they may apply the $1200 to a tax debt, and I say YES!!! DO THAT!! but they keep sending me letters saying I owe them $1200.

I have never had any issues with the IRS, but boy does this make me wonder about the competence of our “public servants.”

What that means is the IRS told the Treasury Dept to send you the 1400. As far as they are concerned, it was paid. Double-check your bank account for 3/17/21 and forward to the end of the year. If you are absolutely sure you did not receive it, fill out form 3911 to have them trace the payment.

This, bigtime. I NEVER rely on the Post office for checks or payment. I have the IRS direct deposit anything they owe me. Whenever I pay them, I pay them through their online portal and send in the paperwork/returns later. A digital trace of an IRS email beats a paper trace through the post office anytime.

I got the same thing. Notice CP11 claiming I owe $1,002.63 due to a child tax credit. Can’t get them to answer their phone!

I filed using Free Tax USA. They told me that I was entitled to a credit and I filed electronically expecting a refund. IRS said no. I paid about $900 balance due on April 15.

Lots of luck. My first $1200 stimulus check was lost or stolen or mis-delivered or returned to sender. It was mailed but I never got it. I have been waiting almost two years for the results of the payment trace I put in regarding it. I have received many idiotic notices and letters contradicting each other and making ridiculous demands while the payment trace has been pending. I have resubmitted it 3 or 4 times. I don’t think I will ever get the results.

I guarantee you that I did NOT receive funds for the ‘stimulus’.

EVER.

So, it looks like you’re definitely the guy to ask:

Were there 2 ‘stimulus’ checks, one in 2020 and one in 2021 under Biden? That was my recollection, reinforced by the TurboTax question.

It seems that I’m not alone (at least one or 2 others in this thread). I think I’ll have to go consult with a tax specialist.

When I try calling the call goes on hold a while then I get an outgoing message that I am calling too late in the day and they cant help that late (even it it isn’t late in the day).
I was thinking about contacting my (Democrat) congressman for help but figured they would check and find out I am a registered Republican and not want to help. Do you think I should try anyway?

Hmmm...

I didn’t get the first one, yet the same question was on my 2020 return and resulted in a credit for 2020 with no IRS notice.

The only thing different for this year was the IRS notice of revocation of the credit and tax due (I don’t have the notice in front of me).

That’s EXACTLY what happened last year for my 2020 taxes.

I’m wondering if they’re claiming a check was mailed out to me and cashed (It wasn’t me: I’m one of the few that can state that I’ve NEVER received and cashed a ‘stimulus’ check, and they certainly have never deposited it into my account...they don’t have that info).

Nope.

On my 2020 filing, TT asked the question if I received the ‘stimulus’ (I answered No, as I did not).

It credited 1400 against my tax due and no notice was generated from IRS regarding any problems whatsoever for my 2020 federal return.

If you read the comments, others received a credit as well.

I will concede that when doing my 2020 taxes the last thing I expected was to get a credit for stimulus I didn’t need or want. I didn’t know what to expect this year, but the results speak for themselves in this post.

Yup. That’s a good way to explain it.

I submitted my taxes in early April, and they were accepted.

Then last week I received a letter from the IRS telling me I owed them $6,000 — which reflected the “refundable child tax credit” we had received in 2021.

Yep. We (wife and I) got two Covid checks. Never paid a cent of taxes on them.

ps

I used my first Covid check to buy another AR and 2000 rounds of ammo. Best use of the check I could think of. We went on Fla vacation with the second. I’m sure that there were people who really needed the money, but it was mana from heaven for me. When America goes bankrupt, I’ll probably feel bad.
