Syracuse police are under fire for their response to a call of an 8-year-old accused of stealing a bag of chips from a store in the city's Northside neighborhood, according to multiple reports.
A bystander caught the Sunday encounter in a now-viral video that's garnered millions of views on Twitter and has been viewed over 50,000 times on Facebook.
The clip shows three Syracuse police officers appear to apprehend a Black boy who allegedly stole a bag of Doritos from a Syracuse, N.Y., shop. The boy is visibly shaken up and sobbing as one of the officers grabs the boy by his arms and puts him in the back of a police cruiser.
"What are you doing?" Kenneth Jackson, the bystander who recorded the video, can be heard asking.
"Take a guess what I'm doing," the officer responded.
"What'd he steal — a bag of chips? You're treating him like a whole cold-blooded f------ killer," Jackson continued. "I seen you snatch him up off his bike like he's a grown ass man," he shouted, before offering to pay for the boy's chips.
Officers dropped the boy and his two brothers back off at their home, according to Syracuse.com.
Police told the boys' father, Anthony Weah, that his son was accused of stealing chips, although the father recalled to the outlet that the interaction with the cops was friendly, and no charges were pressed.
But when Weah saw the video, he was outraged, the outlet reported. (snip)
Weah said he is grateful Jackson was there to capture and intervene during the incident. "He was standing up for them," Weah told the outlet.

With those upside-down values, the odds are against that kid.
Good.
Maybe this stops him from being a thug as an adult.
Should scare the crap out of all kids doing crimes when young, boys AND girls. Hopefully stop that crap they are pulling right then and there.
YTeap, that what I saw; a cop trying to break the boy early.
“Maybe this stops him from being a thug as an adult.”
Nah.
Best thing that could have happened to the kid. I got caught putting slugs in the quarter machine at the drugstore and my old man marched the whole group of us down to pay and apologize to the pharmacist. Straightened me right out.
Scared straight works!
“Maybe this stops him from being a thug as an adult.”
No.
Where is her parent our guardian? They should be in jail with this boy.
Teaching right and wrong. Good. Theft is a crime.
“It’s fun to do bad things.”
Scared straight is a white man’s value. Straight up racism!

Hello.
What?... My boy is charged with murder? ...How did that happen?
When I was 10 my pals and I were at a public golf course throwing firecrackers off a bridge. Later we were in the clubhouse and a guy yells out, “Hey Joe, these are those firecracker kids”. Joe, a Walter Matthau looking guy, walks over and flips out a badge and says, “Bill, call juvenile and tell them to come pick these kids up.”
The blood drains from our faces and Joe and Bill bust out laughing and tell us to leave before they change their minds.
A little bit of scare goes a long way when you are young.
I got a security officer to scare my son straight after I discovered something he had taken from a store.
You get much better results by reacting harshly to a child’s first ethical failure or dangerous behavior than you will by applying a punishment too light to outweigh the benefits of thievery or aggression. While we would all prefer it if we could always use gentle instruction, gentle instruction is what you use to teach a child things like addition and subtraction- things that if he should fail to learn to do well, won’t in his future result in him hurting someone, getting shot or thrown in prison. For behavior that can result in harm to another’s person or property, or can result in the child being shot or getting arrested, an immediate slapdown is the only thing that will make a sufficiently strong impression. Reason is useless when the child’s about to burn himself on the stove. He will get burned before you can even think what to say. But knock him away before he sets that hand down on the burner, and you will save him a lot of grief and pain. Let him cry about his hurt dignity if he must, it is better than a burn.
Great story! I bet you all were more white than Casper.
Another chance for the media to stir the race pot.
They should have taken him to the station and taken his prints and mugshots.
And still a half decade from becoming a teen. At this rate by 2030 we will be getting headlines like “Toddler armed with silly puddy carjacks 80 year old couple”
The kid was obviously hungry. Why don’t the parents feed the boy? The day is coming soon when everyone will be hungry.
Yup. That’s the idea…
