In an economy where both parents have to work, a woman often stops breast feeding when she returns to work. In an emergency, breast feeding can be restored over time. I breast fed my first child 9 months when the stress of working made my milk supply shrink to the point my child was annoyed by it and could drink milk and eat baby food. My second child spent his first week in the hospital with aspiration pneumonia. I pumped my milk and was able to breastfeed when I got him home. He nursed for 2 1/2 years. Both were strong and healthy but the second child is much calmer and moee affectionate. They are now about 50 years old.

There are plenty of long established formulas on line for making baby milk. Ideally one could use such a formula while reestablishing breast feeding, or even starting it for the first time which is also possible with effort. Adding baby supplements to such a formula is a good idea. The advice against making your own formula means sanitation must be carefully followed, but may also be encouraged by the big three formula providers. This is especially recommended for people working in third world conditions with people who may be illiterate or lacking normal US sanitation. If you are educated and can follow a recipe successfully, you should be able to make this Evaporated milk formula for short term use. Once safe supplies are once again available or you succeed in breastfeeding you can stop using the homemade type. Also, remember: NEVER USE CONDENSED MILK it is very sweet.
I found breast feeding to not be that labor or time intensive.
There’s no bottles to wash or sterilize, formula to prepare, refrigerate, warm up and make sure it’s not too hot, carry with you in a diaper bag, run out of, worry about using contaminated water, ……..
Even when the mother stays home full-time, it can be tough - for many women (though not for all). Some screaming, hungry babies stay latched all day long. Some other babies would prefer to sleep and starve. I had both types, but I was committed to making it work. IIRC, I nursed the first one for 6 months, the second for 8 months, and the third for a year.
Women who formula-fed sometimes would refer to those of us who nursed as lazy. I would tell them, believe me, mixing formula and pouring it into a bottle would be far easier for me.
