Satisfying sequel hits nearly all the marks while outdoing the original
The 1986 smash “Top Gun” was both a movie and a pop cultural moment.
The latter mattered more, given the tenor of the times. President Ronald Reagan lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW D.C., and his confidence buoyed the nation. Pop hits like “Danger Zone” and “Take My Breath Away” crushed the Billboard charts, and rightly so.
The film’s star, Tom Cruise, couldn’t be more movie-star handsome or powerful within the industry — even if 1985’s “Legend” showed his commercial vulnerability.
“Top Gun” was the right movie at the right time, even if the film itself was far from great.
So where does that leave “Top Gun: Maverick?”
The oft-delayed sequel can’t replicate that Reagan-era optimism or the original’s rah-rah patriotism. This is 2022, and cheering on a straight white male military hero is problematic to the small but vocal minority that runs the culture.
Don’t tell that to Cruise.
The ageless star is in full control of his film destiny, and he clearly helped “Maverick” avoid most, if not all, of the culture war booby traps.

It is Navy. NAS Fallon, NV. It’s simply awesome. I wasn’t crazy about the movie, but TOP GUN is an awesome place and a great command. I had the honor of working with them while managing the creation of some interactive computer training for them in the early to mid-2000s.

I read a LOT because of my job as night security at a shipbuilding yard. 12 hour shifts leave me a lot of time between rounds and I read. No cell phone. I don't read fiction because I figure I have to learn something from any book. I read a lifetime's SciFi when I was a teenager, anyway.
After the young’ns make fun of me, I ask them if they are going to make it to my age. Let them think about it.

Movies weren’t serious in general jn the 80’s. Certainly “Top Gun” was less silly than the “Iron Eagle” series.

She looks like she’s 80. Old ain’t bad...it beats the other option,but looking so unhealthy at 65 is no good. We know what obesity does to risks of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. She appears to have aged much faster since her “wedding”.
Me neither.....in his 50’s now he wants to still be in the movies even if it takes a re-run of the same years ago.
My son was asked “Is your mom still great looking’...at his class reunion. You know things have changed when he answered “ Yeah, for her age she is!’ HAHAHAHA!
No return from that physical shape. CGI say “Now Way”, not enough processing power.
After you see “Top Gun” be sure to watch the parody called “Hot Shots.”

One of the best things about the first Top Gun was the sound track. I read the article but it only mentions in the headline about the old music. How is the music in the new one?
