Huge 55-Foot Boat Goes Up in Flames Off Welsh Coast

RNLI volunteers sped to the rescue as the vessel was "engulfed" in flames

A huge 55-foot boat went up in flames near a Welsh coast with two people managing to escape. Emergency services came to the rescue on Saturday night after the vessel caught on fire near Aberthaw.

In a post on social media, Barry Dock RNLI said two people had abandoned a 55-foot vessel, which was "engulfed" by flames, and had taken refuge on a life raft. A pilot vessel known as Bristol Interceptor was first to reach the scene and take the two seafarers onboard. You can read all our stories about Barry here.

Meanwhile, the local lifeboat station said its all-weather lifeboat sped from Barry Dock to the location of both the pilot vessel and burning boat, which were 1.5 miles south of Aberthaw. A volunteer crewmember was then transferred onto the Bristol Interceptor, where they administered casualty care, and remained there until the pilot vessel sailed back to Barry Harbour.

"The RNLI all-weather lifeboat remained on scene with the burning vessel but unfortunately the vessel sank," said the lifeboat station in the post and shared pictures of the fire and smoke billowing from the boat. A spokesperson for RNLI said that when the crewmember assessed the two people who had been rescued, the only injury was a sprained ankle and they didn't need any further medical treatment after they were brought back to Barry Harbour.

It doesn’t look all that unfortunate - what was there to salvage?

It’s huge for a dinghy or tender, smallish for a yacht.

Just wait till someone’s EV spontaneously combusts on some packed RORO ferry with hundreds of passengers on board and not a sparsely occupied car carrier....
