President Biden is not very good at his job, and yet, I thank God every day that Biden is president. In the Ukraine crisis, he has redeemed the hopes of those who voted for competence. The administration’s warnings to Moscow were unambiguous without being hysterical. Our revelations of intelligence unmasking Russian disinformation and false flag narratives were on the nose. Biden’s coordination with European allies was a skillful presentation of unity (special kudos to Secretary of State Antony Blinken).
There were some missed opportunities. The president should have placed the invasion of Ukraine in a broader historical context and outlined how the struggle between democracy and authoritarianism is the defining issue of our time, whether abroad or at home. And he ought not to suggest or pretend that Americans can be spared any hardship, even higher gas prices, during this fight.
But Biden sees clearly what sort of menace Russian President Vladimir Putin is. Only the most obtuse or twisted soul could fail to see it … which brings us to the president’s predecessor.
A quick refresher on former President Donald Trump’s relations with Putin and Ukraine leaves little doubt that far from deterring Putin, he was Putin’s most reliable “useful idiot.”
Trump wasn’t the first president to go soft on Putin, of course. Barack “Tell Vladimir I’ll have more flexibility after the election” Obama plowed that ground very well. But at least Obama knew what he was doing. He chose diffidence and called it wisdom. Trump was a dupe and a dope, a walking refutation of the adage “you can’t kid a kidder.”
At Trump’s first meeting with Putin, he accepted the Russian’s denials of election interference

The world has turned upside down.
The people I used to think were rational have become crazy and the people who I thought were crazy are now rational.
Strange days indeed.
Mona Charente is a conservative commentator and columnist. I remember reading her work during the Clinton years in the Conservative Chronicle, she was level headed and made sense back then. I don’t know what’s going on now.
She’s more stupid than Bidet.
Bushies and Clintonites were just two sides of the same coin. The only difference was who got to be in the White House at the time.
She peaked in the Reagan years. Liberal Jew who correctly understood the Soviet threat. Irrelevant and toxic since. Neocon.
...cause peace and prosperity for the serfs, sucks.
Here's a few of the elements that led to the Russian invasion.
*As president, Trump was highly critical of NATO, and was clear about putting limits on their activity, and relieving the US of the security of Europe: Putin did not plan an attack during Trump's administration because there was no threatening rhetoric coming from the US.
*Late last year, as president, Biden made it clear to the Ukraine president that the US would not object to their proposed NATO membership.
*Biden later stated that the US would not respond if there was a "minor incursion" into Ukraine. Even though it was walked back by the White House management team who actually operate the US government. The message was sent that there was not a cohesive opinion against Russian aspirations.
Charen bizarrely gives credit to Biden for awkwardly allowing Russia to invade Ukraine, while dismissing Trump's solid record of suppressing Putin's ambitions.
If Trump were President, THINGS WOULD NOT LIKE THIS!
And, you, you Putz, would have NOTHING TO WRITE ABOUT.
Truthfully, I thought she had died.
Mona is Ann Coulter without the long blonde hair worn like a sixteen year old.
“Trump wasn’t the first president to go soft on Putin” ???
Wow! The Democrat Party keeps churning out dumber and dumber morons every day!
Putin walked all over Barack and now is walking all over Biden. But while Trump was President, Putin walked on egg shells and behaved like a good little 2nd world dictator.
I don’t understand how someone as stupid as her has survived to adulthood without drowning in a rainstorm from forgetting to close their mouth!!!
Her hero, Dumbya, was much softer on Putin.
Yes. I recall once thinking that she might make a good replacement for Peggy Noonan at the Wall Street Journal. She is a childhood friend of the Washington Post's Ruth Marcus, and I suspect that Marcus took her over to the dark side.
Back in the 90s Mona Charen passed as a conservative, but when the rubber met the road, she went hard left.
Now she is just plain nutz.
Never ever even heard of her.
Sounds like she will make a great CNN Repub.
Mona Charen - because Stupid should hurt.
Another liberal dinosaur I can’t believe is still alive.
She’s the new Helen Thomas.
