A couple in Sana Cruz was arrested on Saturday after verbally and physically assaulting a gay couple along Blackburn Street.
It happened at about 11:30 a.m. when two men were walking their dog and crossed path with a man and a woman who were also were walking their pet. The dogs suddenly began barking and fighting and things then escalated between the pet owners, according to police.
The suspect is accused of yelling homophobic epithets at the gay couple and assaulted one of them.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. —
The Santa Cruz Police Department made an arrest for a hate crime assault on Saturday morning.
At 11:30 a.m. officers responded to an assault on the 100 block of Blackburn Street.
Investigators say two men, who are a couple, were walking their dog on Blackburn Street. They passed a man and a woman who were also walking a dog. The two dogs got into a fight, which angered the male suspect. The male suspect called the pair homophobic slurs and assaulted one of the men. The woman with him aided in the assault.
Both ran from the scene.
Surveillance video in the area showed the suspects fleeing into a nearby apartment complex. Officers were able to find the apartment and identify both the man and women they suspected of the assault.
The man, Richard Wood, a 28-year-old Santa Cruz resident, and the woman, Victoria Van Sandt, were arrested and booked into the county jail on charges of assault, conspiracy and violation of one’s civil rights — also known as a hate crime.

Freedom of speech MUST BE DEFENDED for EVERYONE if it is to be protected for YOU! NONE/ZERO exceptions.
You can abhor what someone says, but they have a RIGHT to say it and you have the right to tell them, in no uncertain terms, what you think about what they said, or just walk away.
One justice standard for one group and a different standard for all other groups is NOT “equal protection of the laws”.
The law pendulum has been allowed to swing way past center where it belongs. This can not correct the sins of the past.
The past is the past. It CAN’T be changed. It’s like awarding money damages for a wrongful death. It doesn’t bring them back.
So lets not jump on the band wagon for the justification of “hate crime laws.
Hate crime laws are unconstitutional and should be discarded.
Hate crime laws simply make our justice system two tiered. Some people receive more ‘justice’ than others.
Has SCOTUS ever ruled on the constitutionality of this clearly unconstitutional concept?

Some of these people should pass a test before being allowed to own a dog.
Two unfamiliar dogs will often fight.
